Hashtags for Instagram

Welcome to the fourth post in a series about Instagram inspired by a talk that Katie and I gave at Blog On MSI in September.  Following on from last week’s post on How to Use Hashtags on Instagram, today I want to share with you some of the hashtags for instagram that I use myself.

We're going on an adventure - Instagram feed (Hashtags for Instagram)

If you read last week’s post on How to Use Hashtags on Instagram you will know about how I research my hashtags and how I keep them in groups on Google Keep so that I can copy & paste them easily.  (If you didn’t read it, it’s definitely worth casting your eye over).

I mentioned in my previous post that its important to vary your hashtags and explained why I felt it wasn’t a great idea to just copy & paste the hashtags used by your favourite Instagrammer.  Taking that into consideration, when I share with you the hashtags I use myself, please bear in mind that they should just be a starting point for you to create your own lists using the research tips I shared in my last post.  Also, it’s always worth checking out what a hashtag is about before you start using it – eg I might use #bestofMcr for local images, which is no good if you’re taking photos of York Minster . . .  (If you are going to be going away somewhere, research local hashtags before you go!)

Some of the hashtags I use are very specific to my own feed eg #MummyandBo or #Mummylovesnavy – some people like to hashtag their own blog or a topic within their Instagram to make it easier to find all the photos they’ve posted on that theme – this can be really useful for including them in a blog post at a later date.

#MummyLovesNavy screenshot - Hashtags for Instagram

I don’t like to use really generic hashtags like #picoftheday or #instagood as whilst they are really popular hashtags, they’re also fairly pointless as so many people are using them your image is likely to go unnoticed.  Far better to use a smaller but active, more specific hashtag like #OurEverydayMoments.

So here are the groups of hashtags I’m using at the moment:

Thank you so much for these. It’s much better to be part of small communities rather than the general ones. Even better just set them up as a shortcut on my iPhone keyboard, amazing! Do you usually put hashtags under the image or in the comments?

  29. December 21, 2016 / 11:02 am

Have loved all your Instagram posts, very clear and easy to follow, so helpful for many of us I’m sure. Thanks for taking the time to do these (and btw your talk at BlogOn was fab too) πŸ™‚

What a great post thank you. Would love to see #Outdoorsandhappy in your tags for outdoors pretty please xxx

  34. January 22, 2017 / 11:08 pm

Great post, I’m forever trying to think of different hashtags to use – I usually end up with the typical ones that like you say, go unnoticed! I’ll trial some of these and hopefully go from there! (I have one called #whyisyourchildcrying – and with good reason, my son is ever the drama queen and this hashtag fits the pictures perfectly!)
But as it’s not really used by anyone else it’ll be fab to get some more traffic through using some more well known ones! Thankyou! – becky xo
