Making positive lifestyle changes with Modius

I’ve written about my weight a few times over the years – sharing a weekly weight loss diary for a few months when I was on Slimming World some four years ago. I lost some weight, I gained it back. That’s basically the story of my life.

weight loss - may 2015
This picture was taken about four years ago when I was doing pretty well on Slimming World – I was still overweight but pretty happy with how I looked and felt.

Body confidence is all well and good but the fact is, I’m overweight and it’s damaging my health

I’ve always struggled with my weight to some extent – and whilst I do love the whole body confidence movement online at the moment, I can’t totally get on board with it as, regardless of whether I’m proud of my body for the things it has done and the things it can do, regardless of how I look or how I feel about how I look, the fact is I am overweight. Not just overweight but obese. And it doesn’t take a genius to work out that’s just not great for my health.

December 2019 - overweight - before using the Modius headset
I actually really struggled to find a “fat” photo as I either delete them because I hate them, or I’ve managed to stand in a flattering position / pulled the kids in front of me to disguise the bits I don’t like etc. . .

At pretty much every medical appointment I have, there will be a comment about my weight – sometimes it will be a “Oh well done, you’ve lost a few lbs since your last appointment” but more often it will be a comment that being overweight won’t be helping my blood pressure / leaky kidneys / asthma / back problems . . . and of course I know this.

I know that when I’m heavier it affects my asthma more. I know that the fact my weak left ankle randomly swells up is probably not helped by the extra stones of pressure I put on it. I know that my aches and pains in my hips and legs when I walk too far or stand too long are either caused by or exacerbated by my body being too bloody heavy. I know this. And yet that doesn’t help me to be able to do anything about it.

It’s fair to say that like so many people, I am an emotional eater – I eat to celebrate, to commiserate, to socialise, when I’m bored and out of habit. If my head is in the game, I can be really focused and try really hard to stick to my meal plan but as soon as that will power wavers, it tumbles like a tower of bricks.

Black Milk - eating the waffles

I’ve tried all sorts over the years – I had great success with Slimming World after I had Chloe losing nearly 4 stone before our wedding but I’ve struggled to stick to it since. I’ve tried brutal nine day detoxes, calorie counting, hypnotherapy -which didn’t work at all, listening to pods before bed which I think probably helped a bit but long term, nothing has really worked for me.

It’s time to try something different.

Early last year I saw the Modius headset featured on This Morning and thought it sounded pretty incredible:

Fast forward a year or so and I now have a Modius headset ready to try out myself and I can’t wait to get started.

At first the Modius headset really does sound too good to be true doesn’t it? I mean losing weight by wearing a fancy headband while you’re relaxing on an evening, surely that can’t work?

But actually, the science behind the Modius headset is pretty fascinating.

The team at Modius explained that the reason some people find maintaining a healthy weight harder than others is linked to the fact that people have different resting metabolic rates which are determined by both gender and genetics. As such, each person’s brain fights to maintain a predetermined weight range and if you go above or below this your brain will push your body to settle back to this range – even thought it might not be where you want it to be! Which explains, in part, why even when we do successfully manage to lose weight, it can be such a huge battle to keep it off (and one which so many of us lose).

The Modius headset sends a signal to the area of the brain associated with appetite, cravings and feeling full (this nerve is called the hypothalamus) – and whilst it isn’t a magic solution that means you can suddenly eat all the pies without gaining weight or that you’ll start dropping stones whilst sitting watching tv, it should make it much easier to stick to your weight loss plan.

Will the Modius headset work for me?

So here we are. I’m going to trial the Modius headset for the next 90 days and report back! As I’ve said, the Modius headset isn’t a magic solution on it’s own, it’s to be used in support of other lifestyle changes – so here’s hoping that with the help of eating more carefully, taking more exercise and using the Modius headset 5+ days a week, I can make some progress this time!

Wish me luck!

Thank you! Everyone I’ve mentioned it to is really interested to see how it goes. It’s not a cheap piece of kit but for something non-invasive, if it works it will be worth every penny!

Hi Sabina, I’m only a couple of weeks into using it but so far I do think it is making a difference – I definitely feel less hungry. I’ll be writing an update next month.
