We all know how important smoke alarms are, how important it is to test them regularly. But do you know how important it is to have a carbon monoxide alarm?
Project SHOUT is a campaign aiming to raise awareness of the dangers of carbon monoxide. The campaign is headed up by Stacey, who lost her little boy to carbon monoxide poisoning and Louise whose family were saved by having a carbon monoxide alarm. How very different these two tales could have been.
Incredibly, one person each week dies from this silent, deadly gas and the majority of these deaths would be prevented with the use of a carbon monoxide alarm and by taking sensible precautions such as having appliances checked regularly and learning the symptoms of CO poisoning. Carbon monoxide deprives the body of oxygen leading to oxygen starvation which causes flu like symptoms in the initial stages. Things to look out for include; headache (from mild through to severe throbbing), nausea & vomiting, fatigue, confusion, fast heart rate – these symptoms left unchecked will lead to unconsciousness, convulsions, cardiorespiratory failure and death.
If you haven’t already got one, please getting one fitted and make sure testing it regularly is added to your to do list. You just don’t know how important it might turn out to be.
