Seriously, who gives a child a gun?

This morning, whilst pottering around and putting the washing out I heard a news story reported on the radio which stopped me dead in my tracks.

A nine year old girl in the US has killed her shooting instructor by accident while being shown how to use a high-powered submachine gun.

There are so many things unbelievably wrong with that but seriously, who gives a child a gun? At what point did someone think it was ok – appropriate, fun or necessary for a child of primary school age to be handling a machine gun?

The young girl lost control of the Uzi as a result of the automatic recoil . . ..  You have to wonder how anyone expected a small child to have the strength to be able to control such a machine.  This is a gun that was designed for and used in military combat – it is not a toy.  According to news reports the instructor actually turned the machine to automatic  and basically told her to go for it.

Just the name of the shooting range makes my skin crawl “Bullets and Burgers” –  Say what?! Bullets and burgers, oh yes perfect bedfellows, my idea of the perfect night out that.  What’s wrong with going bowling?

According to The Telegraph

It is illegal for children under the age of 18 to carry a gun in Arizona but the rule does not apply on private property, or if the youngster is accompanied by a parent or certified instructor.

I can’t be the only one that thinks that’s utterly insane?  Oh it’s all right son, I’m here watching you, you go ahead and play with that being metal hunk of death . . ?

And what of the poor girl?  What of this poor 9 year old girl who now has to live with the fact that she accidentally shot someone in the head?

Completely agree. Been talking about it all day. Poor child will be scarred for life and for what? So she can handle a gun she shouldn't even be touching. What possible need is there for arming children. Serious responsibility is for adults not children.

Shocking, truly shocking. I can't believe anyone would think it is OK to give a child a weapon?!

Im with you , that is utterly idiotic. Its not even like they were clay pigeon shooting , that i can sort of understand if thats your 'thing' but a machine gun!!!!

Yes – I know what you mean. Clay pigeon shooting, an air rifle etc might have been a bit more understandable. A machine gun?! Madness.

I saw that story on the news too! I am so glad we don't have the same gun laws! That little girl will never forget that incident – she killed a man at the age of nine! I know it wasn't deliberate but she killed a man!

This is it Tracy, it wasn't her fault, it was an horrific accident but really – why was she put in that position in the first place? She'll never get over that 🙁

This news story really shocked me. I can't believe anyone would put a gun in a child's hands ever, let alone for 'educational' or 'leisure' purposes. Such a sad and horrible story all round really x

Couldn't agree more, I read about a 4 yr old who accidentally shot and killed his baby sister and the parents said it was 'tragic but gods will' !!!
