Sunday Sunshine in Heaton Park – An Autumn Bucket List Update!

Ben and Chloe have both been obsessed with collecting leaves on the school run this week – typically soggy dirty leaves that I had no desire to carry back home to my house!  I promised Ben that we would go collecting leaves this weekend which he was really excited about.

I had only really intended to go to our local park (which we are lucky is just up the road) but it was such a lovely morning we decided to hop in the car and venture up to Heaton Park. As ever we hadn’t told Ben and Chlo what we were doing, just that we were “going on an adventure . . . “.  I intentionally dressed them both in clothes that I didn’t mind getting filthy and shoved our wellies on.

Usually when we go up to Heaton Park we park in in the Hall Car Park so that we are close to the play area but today we chose to park in the Lake Car Park as we wanted to explore rather than play on the equipment.

Chloe was super excited by the ducks and kept shouting at them! (It was a shame I hadn’t thought ahead and taken bread for feeding them – must remember that next time!) Typically I missed much of her excited shouting & quacking but I still think the video is super cute:

Both children really relished in the freedom to run about, scrunch in the leaves, squelch in the mud, roll around on the grass and generally get mucky.  It was warm enough that we didn’t need our coats, a beautiful bright day to start Autumn off.  Some of the leaves were just starting to turn on the trees – the park is going to be stunning in another couple of weeks.  We were really surprised not to find any conkers – there were several horse chestnut trees but not a single conker on them?!  (I half wondered if they’d all been removed for some sort of crazed health and safety reason!)  So no chance of ticking conkers off the Autumn Bucket List today!

On the way back to the car Ben ran down a hill and slipped right into huge patch of mud – cue him spending the journey home in his pants!  Typically I just missed catching it on camera!

The pictures don’t actually do justice to how
filthy he was!

So far this weekend we have ticked three things off our list:

1. Collect conkers
2. Get wrapped up and go to a bonfire (this might fall by the wayside depending on Beak!)
3. Kick leaves   22.09.13
4. Splash in puddles  22.09.13 (and basically every wet school run!)
5. Make an apple crumble
6. Enjoy the fireworks (assuming Ben and Chloe aren’t scared this year . . . )
7. Introduce Ben and Chloe to the joys of hot Ribena
8. Autumn themed crafts
9. Celebrate my beautiful god daughter’s 1st birthday  21.09.13
10. Introduce the kids to the joy of sparklers
11. Blow “dragon breath” in the cold air
12. Leaf rubbings

And Dave has just bought the ingredients for me to make my apple crumble so I think that will be a job for Chloe and I on Thursday when I’ve got a day off work!

Ooh, love the idea of an Autumn bucket list-hope you manage to squeeze them all in in time! Nothing quite like a bit of dirt and mud is there?!

I'm loving having the list to give me a bit of focus and force us to get out 😀 I intentionally kept the list short in the hope of giving us the best chance of completing it! x

You are making great progress on your list! I love the fact you just grabbed their wellies and were prepared for them having some fantastic messy play, which they obviously enjoyed. Thanks for linking up your outdoor fun and joining in with Country Kids.

Ben thought it was great that he was allowed to get so dirty and kept checking that I wasn't cross. I told him we'd come out to get mucky & it didn't matter, I would only be cross if we were on the way to school or something 🙂

It's the first time I've let her do it and I have to admit it didn't last long. Ben is a bit stronger and more sensible – Chloe just wanted to run, so Thomas did – which in turn made her run faster and it was all a nightmare haha.

That video is sooo cute. Love your autumn bucket list too, I started a summer one, didn't even get around to finishing writing it. Must try harder! Conker collecting, apple picking & leaf kicking are the best things about Autumn 🙂

I love your bucket list what a great fun idea. We have a couple of horse chestnuts in the garden and this year had more conkers than normal, loads of them have disappeared though thanks to a couple of cheeky squirrels! You'll have to let us know how yummy your crumble is 🙂

Great Autumn list. I really ought to make one. I always forget the bread for the ducks. You're one cool mamma letting them get mucky in the mud. What else are washing machines for!
