Some thoughts ahead of SATs week. . .

Last Updated on 5 May 2023 by Colette

It doesn’t matter how many times we tell her we don’t give two sh*ts about her SATs results, that we’re proud of her regardless of what some arbitrary test says, that the SATs are to test the school not her…

We’ve told her all of these things, Mr G has told her all of these things too.

And yet the last few weeks have been so SATs heavy that school has done nothing but show her otherwise. She is sick to the back teeth of SATs revision and general SATs chat. Each night when I ask her how her day was, I get little more than ‘meh’. All this SATs focused work has even sucked the joy from English for her. She has had enough.

Our daughter ahead of Year 6 SATS week

It breaks my heart that, this lunch time, our beautiful, talented, hilarious, cheeky, sensitive little girl was practically silent as we ate and close to tears when she admitted she was just thinking about her SATs. These tests are weighing heavy on her and no matter what we say to her, she it still feeling the pressure to perform, the pressure to do her best and reach “expected” or even “greater depth” despite having spent much of Year 4 and a good part of Year 5 at home. Why on earth we are putting our children through these test after what they have lived through in the last couple of years I really don’t know.

I keep telling her that actually I think she’ll quite enjoy this coming week – getting to school early and having toast with her friends, the excuse to skip swimming tomorrow night, the different routines in school. We’ve promised to take her out for tea on Friday to celebrate it all being over but until then all I can do is give her my best squeezes and keep reminding her how much we love her.

Sending all our love to the Y6 children, the parents and the teachers this week. It will all be over soon x x x

This post from my friend Helen shares some great advice on preparing your child for their tests.
