Treasure Hunting
A great way to get to know the world around you is to get out and about exploring and treasure hunting with a compass.
It is a simple and fun activity that kids will love.
Hide some treasure (could be anything!) in your garden or local park and set up a list of instructions to find it using compass bearings
They might look complicated to start with, but compasses are pretty easy to use.
The needle on a compass will always search for north. Once it has found it you can see where east, south and west are and begin to plot your route.
- Decide on your starting point
- Take an interesting route to get to where you place your treasure using your compass and write down the directions, so it looks something like thisÂ
- Take 20 steps North.
- Take 15 steps West.
- Take 15 steps South
- Take 15 steps South.
- Take 30 steps East.Â
Now teach your kids how to use the compass then challenge them to go and find the treasure you have hidden!
Treasure hunting is such a fun way to encourage kids to spend time outdoors.
