Alkrington Woods likes to market itself as “Middleton’s Prime Recreational Space”. This picturesque local nature reserve offers over 120 acres of mature woodland, meadows, rivers and fishing lodges – and is a jolly nice place for a walk! But then I’m always won over by a waterside stroll!
Alkrington Woods offers up three public footpaths and plenty of places to explore – it is fairly flat but the paths are very muddy in places and probably not all that pushchair friendly even on a dry day. (Though as you can see, we visited on a very snowy day in January shortly after the area had been flooded so I might be wrong – I’ll update after a future visit!)
Dotted throughout the nature reserve are little fairy doors and QR codes giving more information about tree types (which I love!). Amy was super excited to spot various doors as we walked and enjoyed talking about what sort of fairies might live behind them!
There are plenty of benches around Alkrington Woods offering up a place to sit and catch your breath or rest a while with a brew!

Parking for Alkrington Woods (M24 4EA) if free of charge. The small car park is locked at 4pm each day so don’t get caught out!
