American Candy Taste Test!

My best friend moved to America when I was seven years old.  We went to visit her twice – once when I was about nine and again when I was twelve.  I remember being amazed by how different things were, how meanings for the same word could be completely different or how the same brand of sweet could be so different state side.  I was obsessed with a Cookies n Cream Twix the first time we visited but they must have been a special edition as they weren’t available when we went back.  Nic and I used to love trying out all the various American candy – anything sour grape flavoured was always a big hit!

These days it’s much easier to get hold of American candy in the UK – supermarkets have sections selling all manner of sickly sweet cereals and marshmallow based products!

American Candy

We thought it would be good fun to try a range of American candy to see how it fairs compared to our own sweet treats.

A&W Root Beer
This is my “unimpressed” face . . .
Root Beer is most definitely one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever tasted – it smells just like Deep Heat, and not just a faint hit of it either.  Horrible, horrible stuff!
Tootise lolly pop
Think he enjoyed the Tootsie lolly!
American Candy is quite different to the sweets we have in the UK – the flavours are often bizarre, strong and unnatural – this isn’t always a bad thing, it just appeals to quite a specific taste.  Ben and Chloe certainly enjoyed trying them all out.

The after effects of some very blue candy!
Buying American candy in the UK can be really expensive, you do have to remember that you’re purchasing an imported product and unfortunately the price has to reflect that.
American Candy for me holds a certain amount of childhood nostalgia and novelty value but I wouldn’t want to eat it all the time!
Have you got any American favourites?

I think it's a very reasonable price actually…..I know Root beer is £2.50 a can in an American sweet shop in town.

I think once you bear in mind the cost of buying imported products its not bad value at all.
I think Root Beer must be an acquired taste – I nearly spat it out 😉
