Amy hasn’t had any new clothes for ages partly because she seemed to have absolutely loads of lovely things but was just wearing the same stuff on repeat (I think we’re all guilty of that!) and partly because I got so sick of seeing her clothes on the floor or shoved into drawers so I told her I wouldn’t be buying her anything else until she could look after what she had. I was quite determined that she needed to feel bored of wearing the same things or to really notice that she didn’t have some things she might need before I bought her anything new.
I spent a chunk of time last month going through her wardrobe and cleared out a huge pile of clothes that she’d outgrown – I put some bits on Vinted and passed others to a friend. I was working on the basis that a good wardrobe de-clutter would put her in a better position to be able to keep everything tidy and organised but would also help us to see what she did and didn’t have.
She’s got some definite gaps in her wardrobe at the moment as we move into the colder months so we picked up a Zara Kids sweatshirt (in a very on-trend burgundy) and a Next denim skirt from Vinted using some of the money we’d made selling her old things and she’s just used her birthday money from Nana to treat herself to some new tops and a cute grey denim skort from Next – hopefully paying for her new things herself will help her to look after them better!
Her gorgeous patent Chelsea boots are part of the Startrite AW24 collection and I love that pop of gold! I’d totally wear them myself. The only downside is that, as I think is often the case with boots of this style, they are a little loose around her ankle so she’s borrowed my new chunky black socks to wear over her tights! She loves that they are a bit dressier than her usual weekend uniform of trainers.
I remember going shopping with Amy for her birthday a few years ago and her saying to Aunty Custard, “Mum just doesn’t get my style” – I did “get” her style, I just didn’t particularly like it! Her style is definitely changing as she’s growing up and it’s really interesting to see that she isn’t massively influenced by her older sister’s style – they like to wear very different things and also have quit different body shapes. I’m always conscious to try and give her the choice when it comes to her sister’s hand-me-downs rather than forcing her to wear things she doesn’t like whilst also being aware that some things just fit really differently on them and what works for one doesn’t work for the other. I know my sister hated feeling that she only ever got to wear my own clothes, I’m hoping we’ve avoided that feeling for Amy so that instead she’s just excited to get the bits she wants or that fit her well and we pass other things on to friends.
