This year for our family holiday in France, we spent May half term at Domaine des Naiades in Port Grimaud, near St Tropez in the South of France.
Domaine des Naiades is a Marvilla Park (owned by Eurocamp) – we’ve holidayed with Eurocamp many times over the years and find them easy to book with.
Check in at Domaine des Naiades
Check in at Le Domaine des Naïades was easy – luckily in this instance the staff spoke English which I must admit was a relief as my usually passable French was definitely not free flowing after our long journey (22 hours – but that’s for another post).
At check in we were given wristbands to wear throughout our stay – for the adults these act as a key to your accommodation however, the children’s wristbands do not open the door. We ended up going back and asking for a code for the door as well as we found it frustrating that the children couldn’t open the door themselves – particularly Ben who spent quite a bit of time at our holiday home on his own while we were at the pool. (He wasn’t allowed to swim for much of the holiday due to recent surgery)
We were given an information pack for the site helpfully translated into English, German and Dutch (when we stayed at Camping Les Tropiques last year – everything was in French!) which included a map of the site, information about the swimming pool, opening hours of various onsite facilities and a list of local markets through the week (normally browsing a local market is one of my favourite things to do on holiday in France but this year we didn’t manage it!)
The barrier to the main campsite uses automatic number plate recognition which is convenient. (It’s worth noting that the barrier is locked between midnight at 7am.)
Domaine des Naiades campsite
The campsite itself is set in a large wooded area with 415 pitches. We appreciated that the way the pitches were laid out meant that they felt quite private – ours especially was down little side lane and wasn’t directly facing anyone else which is the dream for me! Our pitch was right in the middle of the park which meant it was far enough away from the pool not to be disturbed by it (some pitches were right next to it) but not so far that the walk back to our holiday home was a hassle. I actually didn’t bother going any further into the park but the kids rode their bikes around quite happily exploring most days.
Because the campsite is in woodland, BBQs are not allowed – you can hire an electric hot plate but we decided not to bother.
It’s worth mentioning that dogs are allowed at this campsite – though I don’t think our Poppy would especially appreciate a visit!
We didn’t speak to many other English guests on the site – other holiday makers were a good mix of German, Dutch, some English and some French.
Swimming at Domaine des Naiades
The swimming pool is always going to be key part of a Eurocamp holiday for us and is one of the first things we look for when we are choosing a campsite.
Open daily from from 10am to 7pm, the swimming pool at Domaine des Naiades is a huge, heated Olympic-sized pool (50m long and very deep – 1.2m at the shallower end and 3.9m at the deep end) with diving boards. There is a separate paddling pool area and mini slide for little ones which is gated from the main pool for safety.
Most importantly for my team of three, Domaine des Naiades is home to two large slides which are open twice a day for several hours – though we found the lifeguards were quite relaxed with closing the slides at the end of the day if they kids were having fun! I think if the park were busier they’d have had to stick more closely to the timetable just to make sure everyone was out.
The water slides are accessed by steep steps and the splash down into a separate plunge pool which is around 1m deep (I must admit that I would have liked it to be a bit deeper!). The bottom of the plunge pool is quite rough and all of us picked up grazes on the “stealth” steps across the back of the plunge pool. I think some water shoes would have been a good idea!
Although the kids would have loved to have the slides open all day, I did appreciate that little bit of peace in the middle of the day when they were closed!
The pool has a lane roped off for more serious swimming – of which we saw quite a bit through the week with several groups of people doing some pretty focused training. The kids were disappointed not to be allowed floats in the pool but they soon got over it.
You can’t take drinks or snacks poolside which I understand from the perspective of keeping everywhere nice and clean but I’d have liked to have been able to keep a drink my by bed for hydration purposes! There is a snack bar just outside the pool but this is only open during peak months- so not May half term.
The beds around the pool aren’t they sturdiest I’ve used but they’re fine once you’re on and plenty comfy enough. I would suggest that on busier days in high season, there’s probably not enough beds around the pool but isn’t that the case everywhere. The busiest day during our stay was Sunday but even then Dave and I managed to snag a couple of beds – mostly we didn’t struggle at all to grab four beds together (and we most certainly weren’t there queuing at 10am for them!)
Domaine des Naiades Campsite Shop
The campsite shop is open from 7.30am to 8pm daily selling all the essentials including freshly baked croissants and pain au chocolat (yes, they are absolutely essential). Typically the only thing we really use the campsite shop for is pastries for breakfast each day though we did grab some beers on the first night and found them to be fairly priced. The girls also picked up some beaded bracelets to take home for their friends. (The also sell pool floats which we thought was a bit odd considering they’re not allowed in the onsite pool – I guess you could take them down to the beach though!)
Domaine des Naiades Restaurant and Bar
Typically we don’t use the campsite restaurant and bar very often – which was just as well this time as it was super expensive and the drinks menu was lacking, especially if you prefer cocktails like me. 12 euros for a fairly poor attempt at a Caipirinha – no thanks! I would haven’t minded the premium prices if the setting matched up but the seating wasn’t comfortable and I preferred the view from my holiday home.
We didn’t eat the restaurant as it was just so expensive that we didn’t feel we could justify it – that said we did use the takeaway service twice and thought that was much better value.
Onsite Entertainment
Typically campsite entertainment at May half term is fairly lacking – not just at Domaine des Naiades but at all the campsites we’ve stayed at in France. This is because it’s not peak season and there’s not enough people to entertain – and to be honest I like it like that. I don’t go on holiday to be entertained, organised fun is not my thing! We were given a timetable of entertainment at Domaine des Naiades for May half term but we didn’t really pay much attention to it but it included things like a daily, aqua aerobics class (which was just noisy!), bingo, film night at the outdoor cinema and a kids’ disco.
Proximity to the beach
Domaine des Naiades is less than 1km walk from the beach – the walk down is easy enough, it’s downhill all the way – coming back we sent Dave to fetch the car so we didn’t have to slog up the hill with all our stuff whilst damp and covered in sand!
We took ourselves down to the beach on Sunday morning at the start of the holiday and then for dinner on our last night. The beach is quite narrow and has a campsite which runs straight onto it so it’s busy but we enjoyed a morning of paddling. What we’ve learned over the years is that it’s me that wants to be near the sea, not the kids – they much prefer the pool and the slides so next time we might look at something inland for a change.
All in we really liked Domaine des Naiades and would absolutely recommend it as a campsite however we said we wouldn’t rush back for a couple as we didn’t love the area as much as we have other places we’ve stayed in the south of France.
