Ben has been wanting to take his stabilisers off his bike for a little while. After seeing how quick and able he was on a balance bike at his Nana’s – we decided he was probably about ready. We had to wait until this weekend to be able to give him the time and attention it needed (we’ve been away a lot over the last month – this is one of the first weekends at home together in ages). The weather wasn’t great yesterday so Dave just brought his bike inside, took the stabilisers off and altered his seat and brakes etc.
Ben was really excited from almost the moment he woke up today that this was going to be the day he learned to ride his bike. I can’t say that I wasn’t nervous we were expecting too much and that he wouldn’t be able to do it . . .
Once we were all up and dressed we traipsed off to the park at the top of the road and Ben was keen to get going.
Dave found that once Ben was pedalling fast enough he could let go briefly and he would just about mange to keep himself going. His balance isn’t as great as we thought and he tends to wobble his handlebars causing him to swerve at which point he either stops pedalling or just lets go completely. It’s a wonder he didn’t really have much in the way of falls – all credit to Daddy for being there to catch him.
Ben got bored quite quickly and we went for a quick play in the park instead (which was much more fun for Chloe too)
Ben did have another crack at riding his bike before we came home but by this point Chloe was a bit fed up and ready for her dinner!
The boys went back out to the park later on in the afternoon for more practice and Mummy did some Googling for tips to help! I think Daddy has got plenty more afternoons of getting a bad back before we crack it but the stabilisers are off and won’t be going back on. In the words of Postman Pat in the episode where Bill learns to ride his back “never ever give up”.
Feel free to comment if you’ve got any tips to help the little dude on his way!
