Powerful Self Image – A guest post

Last Updated on 24 June 2024 by Colette

How I feel is a newly published wellbeing activity book for children aged 4+ and is written in accessible style for early readers. We are delighted to take part in the blogger book tour sharing extracts from the book.

Created by psychotherapist and wellbeing author Becky Goddard-Hill, How I feel contains 40 super fun activities to help younger children talk more easily about how and what they feel. The book also helps them to emotionally regulate, adopt a growth mindset and find ways to be kinder, happier, calmer, and braver.  The book is all about focussing on what children CAN do to help themselves and their emotions.

Research has shown that such early interventions into self-esteem, growth mindset and self-care help create resilient children with positive mindsets.

This lovely activity book is beautifully illustrated by Assia Hart, and it is full of fun physical activities, games and art and crafts.

Here Becky shares an extract form the book from the section on ways to feel braver – confidence is an issue many kids struggle with so here is a little exercise to help with that.

Powerful You

If you think about what you CAN’T do it can make you feel weak

If you think about what you CAN do it can make you feel strong. Feeling strong helps you to try new and hard things.

Look at yourself in the mirror or in a photo. Point to each part of your body and say out loud what it can do,

My ears can…

My eyes can…

My nose can ..

And go all the way down to your toes

Now point to your amazing brain – what can it do? (Can it Think, Imagine, Build, Draw, Count, Dream or Read?)

You are incredible

Now spread your legs slightly apart and raise your arms up in a V sign as if you had won a race. This is a good way to celebrate yourself (and standing this way will make you feel strong too)

Don’t forget other people’s bodies and brains might work differently to yours. And that’s okay. Everyone is amazing in their own wonderful way.

How I feel was published this week and is available to purchase here.
