This summer we started to let Amy play out on the street at the front of our house and she quickly made friends with all the other children near by – some of whom are at her school and others who are at school elsewhere but all seem to be about the same age as each other. She’s super keen to be allowed to ride her bike down the street but our road is always packed with parked cars and, because it is a bit of a through road, we do find people drive a bit quickly down it – all of which combines to make me feel she’s much safer whizzing up and down the path on a scooter!
As a result Amy has worn her old scooter to bits – the wheels had worn unevenly making it wobbly and, in all honesty she was just too big for it. When it came to looking for a new scooter for her, we wanted something that was big enough for her at 10, that looked pretty cool and that would last her until she wasn’t bothered about riding a scooter any more.
The Rampage R1 2023 Complete Stunt Scooter fits the bill perfectly – aimed at kids age 7 to 12 years, Amy loves the colours, I love that the frame is tall enough for her and Ben was really impressed with how easy it was to put together. In fact Ben was pretty impressed over all and said he was quite envious of Amy’s new scooter – well bar the metallic colours but it’s also available in plain black which obviously looks pretty slick.
Ben put the scooter together for Amy with no problems, all the necessary tools are included and, as the website says, it probably only took him about five minutes to do. He spent a bit of time fiddling around making sure that the handle bars were in line with front wheel – something he felt was especially important when Amy has been used to leaning to steer rather than turning to steer.
Straight away Ben commented that he liked the fact the Rampage R1 has a flat base (or deck) which stops ankle injuries (his old stunt scooter had some quite hard edges with a habit of bashing into his ankles and it really hurting apparently!). This isn’t something I’d have noticed myself (not being au fait with scooter riding myself) but Amy also commented that it didn’t hurt the same if she caught it on her ankles.
Amy’s previous scooter had been a three wheel scooter – you know the ones that help you to learn to scoot and you steer by leaning slightly? She’d had it a long time. She was quite nervous about making the move to a two-wheeled scooter, especially one with smaller wheels but she was almost immediately comfortable on the Rampage R1 – it took her a moment to get a feel for where her hands needed to be on the wide handle bars to get the best control but once she’d sorted that she was off.
Amy really likes how comfortable the handle bar grips are, and that they are ribbed so her hands won’t slip.
The ride is smooth and controlled (though Amy could definitely feel it when she was riding on a more uneven surface!) The Rampage R1, like Amy’s old scooter, has a brake on the back wheel which you just need to catch with your foot to slow or stop.
Compared to some other scooters we’ve had, the Rampage R1 is a neat, compact unit making it easy to store in the garage or fit in the car for a day out – though I’d love it even more for this if it folded up.
The Rampage R1 stunt scooter is a great entry level stunt scooter. Ideal for beginners to drop into scootering and develop their skills. At the moment Amy is quite happy riding her scooter around the park or up and down the street – but she is trying to master a small jump and did have a go at riding her scooter down some steps in the park (causing me to panic that she was going to end up with a broken wrist!) I’m not sure she’s quite ready to be attempting the local skate park just yet.
