It’s a really long time since I last wrote a Siblings post. Almost a year in fact. I guess, mostly I just haven’t felt there was much to say – their relationship doesn’t change all that much from month to month, however I felt it was time for an update. Things feel quite different at the moment and I wanted to document that. I’ve also not taken any proper photos of the three of them together in ages thanks to the rubbish weather and spending a lot of time indoors this last few months.
The bickering and general irritation with each other has reached new levels in recent months. I don’t know if it’s how much time we’ve spent in the house, and how little we’ve been able to do in terms of adventures and long walks, or if it’s more just their age but, having spent the last eight or more years with relatively little real arguing or falling out, things in our house feel decidedly more volatile at the moment. None of them seem to have any patience for each other – and I’ve got little patience for that!
Amy is playing the role of annoying little sister a treat – desperately seeking the attention of her older siblings who frankly would rather she left them alone most of the time. They rarely agree on what to watch on tv, or whose turn it is to choose. They argue about who should sit where on the sofa – they all have the same favourite spot which Ben seems to be in most of the time. Amy wants the big two to play with her, they’d rather be doing just about anything else.
At the moment, we have a no tech upstairs rule – this covers phones and tablets but also tvs and gaming consoles – so if they want to use any of these things they have to be downstairs and in their living room. Which mostly works well. However, at the moment I think it sort of forces them to spend time together when they might otherwise not want to – perhaps this is a good thing in the long run, but I feel like maybe spending time separately in their bedrooms might be better for them right now – it would certainly be more peaceful!
Their whole lives I’ve found them “easier” when we are out and about – when they’re not bored essentially. They enjoy each other’s company far more when we’re out doing stuff – even if it’s just going for a long walk somewhere new. So, I do feel some guilt at the moment that we’ve not been doing more – the weather combined with Poppy not being well, means we’ve not been out walking the way we would usually do and we’ve spent a lot of time at home.
With the weather starting to improve and the days stretching a little, we’ve got some lovely weeks ahead – the Easter holidays aren’t all that far off and I’m excited to plan some nice days out in the sunshine for them!
