Six tips for your Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Expedition

Last Updated on 6 June 2025 by Colette

Chloe’s heading off on her Bronze Practice expedition this week and, thanks to years of camping and hiking with both Scouting and as a family, I have no worries that she’ll just get on a do it without too much trouble.

But, a follower asked for tips earlier this week for those who are less experienced and Ben’s tips were so good that I wanted to share them here –

Six tips for your Bronze DofE Expedition:

1. Make sure you have plenty of snacks – I’d recommend stuff you’ll eat slowly like lemon sherbets or individually wrapped things.

2. Music helps distract from the walk if it feels hard or difficult. If you can use a speaker, get everyone to connect and add to the jam if you use Spotify.

3. Keep your bag either away from the edge of the tent or inside the inner because you’ll be sad if your clothes get wet.

4. Wear good strong, comfy shoes.

5. Try your best not to argue about whose fault it is if/when you get lost.

6. Walk at the pace of the slowest in your group – it won’t be fun if someone is constantly complaining that they’re tired or trying to keep up.

We are really fortunate that their school is one of the largest providers of DofE in the North West and they make it compulsory for all Year 9 students. Ben has completed his Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh awards and will be starting his Gold in September when he’s in 6th form – it remains to be seen whether Chloe will choose to complete her Silver next year!
