Perched on the edge of Royton in Oldham, Tandle Hill Country Park is one of those places that instantly makes you breathe a little deeper. With sweeping views across Greater Manchester and towards the Pennines, it’s a local gem that offers the perfect mix of woodland wanderings (making it especially beautiful in the autumn), wide-open meadows, and that all-important sense of space. Whether you’re heading out for a family walk, letting the kids burn off some energy, or simply craving a bit of fresh air, Tandle Hill is a brilliant spot for a day outdoors.

Walking Routes & Trails
Tandle Hill Country Park is popular with dog walkers and families thanks to a range of circular waking routes and woodland trails. You’ll find a map at the main park entrance and several trails which are signposted across the park but to be honest, the girls and I just set off to explore.
As it’s name suggests, Tandle Hill is not flat – expect to tackle a range of sloping paths during your walk – some harder work than others but typically dotted with benches if you need a rest.
There are some footpaths which are paved making them suitable for pushchairs however if you’re looking to take in the best views, you’re going to be navigating a lot of steps or quite a climb up a woodland path – which could be tricky for little legs (if I’m honest I found the steps quite hard work myself but I’ve never been good at a climb!)
If you make it to the top of Tandle Hill, you’ll be treated to views of the Manchester skyline, there’s a war monument and a trig point – all of which were great conversation points with my girls.
Play areas at Tandle Hill Country Park
As well as plenty of open space and woodland to explore and play in, Tandle HIll is home to two relatively small play areas. There’s one right next to the café with a couple of swings, a sand area with diggers and a play house.
Further down there’s a wooden obstacle course and a rope basket swing (my kids still love these!).
Tandle Hill Park Cafe
There is a small café serving hot and cold drinks, ice creams and a range of snacks including toasties – the café is typically open on weekends and through the school holidays. There is some indoor seating and toilets but most of the seating is picnic benches just outside the café. The toilets are temporarily closed until further notice.
Getting to Tandle Hill Country Park & Parking
Whilst there is a relatively small free car park available at the entrance to Tandle Hill Country Park, it does fill up quickly. There is additional on-road parking just outside the park.
If you’re looking to get to Tandle Hill by public transport the 409 bus runs along Tandle Hill Road and Rochdale Road from Picadilly Gardens and and through Oldham. Check Bee Network for the most up to date information on buses and trams in the Oldham
Top Tips Visiting Tandle Hill Park
- Parking at Tandle Hill is free of charge but the car park is relatively small so I recommend getting there first thing or be prepared to park on the road and walk a little further.
- Follow the arrows for planned trails around the park or use an app like Strava to track your walk so you can see where you’ve been and which direction you need to go to get back – this saved us!
- Wear sturdy shoes – expect muddy foothpaths and uneven ground if you decide to venture off the paved footpaths or up to the viewing point.
- I’ve always got some sit mats in my bag – great for a cold damp park bench in the autumn and winter months, for even for popping on a wet swing
- For warmer weather, a large picnic blanket is super handy
- You’ll save a fortune if you take your own drinks. It took me years to learn this one but honestly, five minutes filling bottles with water or making hot drinks to take is absolutely worth it. I didn’t follow my own advice on a recent visit to Tandle Park and spent £4.50 each on hot chocolate for the girls!
- Pack snacks. Always.
- A small first aid kit is always a good idea – I’ve usually got at least wound wipes and plasters in the bottom of my bag!

I love Tandle Hill. It’s a fab spot for a quiet dog walk – especially as the weather turns colder. I’ve found dog walkers there to be much more respectful of putting their dogs on-lead, as other dog walkers or people come into view, compared to Heaton Park too.
