When it comes to planning a trip to Greece, my first thought would always be sunshine and beaches but that’s not the case when you’re looking at a Jet2CityBreak to Athens in early March were you can expect the average temperature to be around 17°C. Where we would normally be looking at sun loungers and outside pool spaces, this time we were focused on proximity to transport links and tourist hotspots – we were heading to Athens to enjoy each other’s company, to explore and to enjoy plenty of Greek food and drink (hopefully alfresco if the temperatures allowed!)
We booked a three night stay at The Modernist Athens choosing it for its central location and luxe vibes and were absolutely not disappointed. This is a gorgeous hotel giving all the qualities you’d be looking for in a four-star boutique hotel from a super stylish interior (think sleek, black and modern yet cosy and comfortable!) to really friendly, welcoming staff and a delicious buffet. The roof top bar with views across Athens to the Acropolis and out to the sea are an added bonus.
The Modernist Athens is easily accessible via public transport from the airport and is perfectly placed for heading into central Athens for popular destinations like The Acropolis or Monastiraki. The Metro runs from Athens airport direct to Evangelismos station which is less than a five minute walk to The Modernist Athens (just make sure you come out of the left side of the metro station as it’s a longer walk with some major roads to cross if you make the mistake of heading out to the right which we did when we first arrived).

From the outside, The Modernist stands out from the other buildings on the road as it is painted black however rather than looking out of place, it just looks sleek and modern.
The welcome at The Modernist is warm and friendly – we were invited to take a seat at reception and brought a very welcome glass of water whilst our paperwork was completed – this took no time at all and we were soon taking the lift up to our room.
There are three room sizes available at The Modernist – small, medium and large all set up to sleep two (though the medium and large rooms will also sleep one infant).
Our large room was super stylish with it’s monochrome palette, floor to ceiling black out curtains and two balconies thanks to it’s corner position and, perhaps most importantly, an enormous, comfy bed! Our room had everything we could have needed for the weekend including a flat screen tv which we didn’t turn on, free WiFi (which is of a good enough standard that we were able to spend an hour doing Chloe’s parents’ evening meetings by video call on our first evening), a mini bar (charged at check out) and coffee making facilities.
I need to give a special mention to the bathroom – mostly for the shower which was spacious and had both a rainfall shower head and a hand held shower head which I personally prefer as I don’t always want to get my hair wet – in fact I almost never want to get my hair wet in a hotel! The other really big positive about the shower that I need to shout about is that the water pressure was really impressive. As someone with fairly long, thick hair, I dread washing my hair anywhere but at home as a weak shower can make washing my hair a right chore – I didn’t actually wash my hair at The Modernist as we weren’t there long enough for it to matter but I know that shower would have seen me right! I know I sound super fussy but a weak shower over a bath really annoys me.
Breakfast at The Modernist Athens is served between 7am and 10am daily. If you’re travelling from the UK then 7am feels hella early with that two hour time difference so we tended to head down to breakfast between half 8 and 9am and didn’t have any issue finding somewhere to sit in the small dining room. (That 7am breakfast might be handy if you’re making an early start to visit the Parthenon though!) Breakfast is absolutely spot on with a cracking buffet as well as a made to order menu included. I started every morning with greek yogurt and honey (obviously) before choosing something from the set menu. We were so well set up for our day with our Modernist breakfast that we didn’t really need lunch (though, out of habit we did tend to find ourselves sitting down for a meal!)
The 7th floor roof top bar at The Modernist Athens is pretty special with a variety of seating, heaters, blankets and glass balustrades to protect you from the elements whilst still giving stunning views of the Acropolis across the rooftops of the capital and all the way out to the sea. The rooftop bar is open till midnight with food and drinks served until 11pm – this is ordered by ringing down to reception and is then charged to your room. Sunset palomas for the win.
I can honestly say The Modernist Athens is one of my favourite hotels I’ve stayed at in a long time and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it for your short break in Athens!
