I first properly discovered make up in my early twenties. And when I say “properly discovered” – I mean “developed an expensive habit for high end products”. This is a habit which has been kept increasingly under control over the years as I’ve had less money to spend and less opportunity to wear a full face of make up – but it doesn’t mean I don’t still get a thrill from buying new products and spending some time putting my face on.
With this is mind I’m sure you can imagine it was something of a treat to be invited up to Selfridges, Trafford Centre to meet up with Hannah at the Urban Decay counter and be introduced to some of the latest releases. Urban Decay is a brand I’ve been aware of for years but haven’t really paid much attention to until now. I’ve been using Primer Potion for years and couldn’t live without it. I’ve also recently discovered the best selling Perversion Mascara – if you haven’t tried this then make it your next mascara purchase, I promise you’ll love it. However that’s as far as my Urban Decay exploration has gone.
Hannah’s enthusiasm for the products she was talking about was infectious and that combined with the fact they looked pretty amazing lead to much cosmetic based excitement on my part! (Just the mention of a new waterline specific eye-liner to be launched next month got me giddy – this is no exaggeration!)
The main focus of our conversation was the latest addition to the famous “Naked” palletes – the “Naked Smoky” does exactly what it says on the tin, every shade you need to create an array of gorgeous smoky looks from a muted daytime look to full on night time glam. Of course there’s little place in my life for full on night time glam right now but that’s not to say I haven’t had a lot of fun exploring the new Naked Smoky.
It pains me to say this but at 35 my eyes are really not looking as young as they once did – my lids are not as taut, my socket no longer visible. This was most obvious in the summer when my sister did my make up and realised that all the work she’d put into my crease couldn’t actually be seen! I’ve also noticed that if I put too much make up on my lids it will transfer to the hooded skin above . . . a great look.
Anyway, all this ageing eye business, whilst not necessarily noticeable to anyone else (I hope), does mean that I have to alter the way I apply my eye make up. I’ve played around quite a bit with the Naked Smoky and thus far have found that it’s gorgeous for day time with “Combust” across the lid and a bit of “Password” smudged into my lash line. It has lasted a full day at work and still looked pretty good by bedtime, a winner.
We’ve been out on a couple of Saturday nights recently so I’ve enjoyed dipping my brush right into the Naked Smoky and playing around. I’ve not been brave enough for the more sparkly end of the palette yet though!
Typically when I’ve tried to take photos of this, the flash has just washed out my make up and you can’t really see what I’ve done. Maybe I just need to put more on!
Aside from the Naked Smoky, Urban Decay have some really exciting looking products coming up for Autumn / Winter (by which I mean CHRISTMAS!) I particularly loved – Naked Illuminated which is some serious shimmer powder for face and body, I was pretty impressed trying this beauty out on the back of my hand. If you like a bit of shimmer for party season then this is the product for you. And also VICE 4 – This epic palette is quite literally a paint box full of stunning jewel colours in an array of shimmers and glitters. Probably not something you’re going to be wearing for work but gorgeous to look at and so much fun for the festive season!
However, Christmas glitz and glam aside, the products on my wishlist right now are:
Brow Tamer – I have pretty thick and slightly curly brows which can be hard work to keep in check. I’ve used clear mascara on them s for as long as I can remember so I’m pretty keen to try out Urban Decay’s specially designed brush and tinted gels – anything which helps towards a perfectly groomed brow is going to grab my attention!
Total Perversion – I’ve already mentioned that I’m completely in love with Perversion Mascara – this fabulous set comes with Perversion 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil at a bargain price of £22 and is definitely going to be making it’s way into my make up bag over the coming weeks.
24/7 Waterline Eye Pencil – I have worn eyeliner in my waterline since my teens but as I’ve got older I’ve found I have more and more of an issue keeping it there. It just seems to smudge out leaving me looking a bit of a mess. I’m super excited to see if this product, which unlike most eyeliners is specifically designed for the waterline, can cut the mustard and give me that defined eye I crave! The fact that it comes in a range of gorgeous colours can only be a bonus!
I’m definitely looking at Urban Decay through new, more glamorous, eyes!
