Watch Voltron on POP this half term!

*This is a commissioned post*

It’s not often I get chance to sit down and watch TV with the kids these days – they tend to watch when they get home from school, a chance for them to sit still and switch off a bit but also a time when I’m trying to get tea sorted and do a bit of housework.

Last night however, I intentionally sat down with them to watch Voltron on POP.  Until recently I’d not actually heard of Voltron however Dave informs me it was on TV when we were kids and was something he watched fairly regularly.  In it’s current guise, Voltron – Legendary Defender, is now available on POP (Freeview 206, Youview 206, Sky 616, Virgin 736, Freesat 603) – weekdays from 6:30pm and weekends from 8am and again at 6.30pm.  This is a bit of a winner for us as Ben is thrilled to be able to watch Voltron on a regular basis!

Kids watching Voltron on POP

Voltron – Ledgenary Defnder, features five teenagers (called Paladins) who were transported from Earth into the middle of a sprawling intergalactic war.  As if this wasn’t complicated enough they are now pilots for five robotic lions in a battle to protect the universe from evil . . . and when they all work together as a team, they can unite to form the mighty power of Voltron.

The lions chose the Paladins for their specific personality traits (you can take a quiz here to find out which of the Paladins you are most like!) and although they are each very different – when they come together to work as a team, something really quite special happens . . . Rules for life kids!! Definitely an important lesson to learn there!

Throughout the episode we watched, the Paladins were fighting against Emperor Zarkon who is on a lifelong quest to gain control of the lions, and therefore Voltron.  There was a specific focus on Shiro who was concentrating on creating a deeper bond with his lion, Ben explained to me that Shiro and Zarkon were “fighting in his imagination”.

Personally Varkon was my favourite character – he added some much needed comedy to the drama, bumbling about the space mall on his hoverbike and chasing the Paladins who he had mistaken for “Space Pirates” – sadly, google informs me that Varkon isn’t actually a regular character but only appears in the Space Mall episode we watched last night!

Voltron

As a bit of a Voltron newbie, I was fairly clueless as to what was going on a lot of the time – however, much the same as when I’m watching films with Dave, Ben knew exactly what was going on and spent much of the two episodes we watched explaining things to me in great detail!  Luckily he was fairly patient and I’m quite sure once I’ve watched a bit more with him I’ll have a much better idea of what’s what!  Although neither of the girls had watched Voltron before, they are both keen to tune in again tonight!

If you’ve got a Voltron fan or two at home this half term then check out the Voltron pages on the POP website where you will find quizzes and games and even some downloadable colouring pages to keep them busy for a while!
