Isn’t it funny how animals can become a trend – a few years ago it was owls and foxes, then sloths and pandas, and more recently llamas seem to be everywhere – on cushions, on stationery and even on “No Drama Llama” memes.
Llama walking is decidedly less common that alpaca walking, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a thing! Llamas are said to be calm, gentle creatures who make great trekking companions.
The biggest difference between llamas and alpacas is their size and their coat. Llamas grow a coarse wool coat, whereas an alpaca’s hair is longer and fine. Although llamas are probably friendlier over all, alpacas more cuddly-looking which probably contributes to their popularity!
Where can you go Llama walking near Manchester?
I’ve put together a short list of llama experiences in Manchester and the surrounding area – from llama trekking to llama meet and greets and places where you simply just go and see llamas. Because llama experiences are less common, you might have to travel a little further afield for your visit! Calderbrook Alpacas, Todmorden Rd, Littleborough OL15 9LY
At Calderbrook Alpacas, Littleborough, you’ll find eleven crazy friendly alpacas (all male and aged between two and ten years old), two llamas and a sheep to boot!
As as well as alpaca walking, Calderbook Alpacas offer private llama walks along various local routes, up to the reservoirs, alongside the canal where the views are said to be spectacular

Nidderdale Llamas, Kiln Farm, Wilsill, Harrogate HG3 5EEN
Nidderdale Llamas is home to over 50 llamas – each with their own personality.
Nidderdale Llamas offer a range of Llama experiences and treks including the Scenic Farm Trek, a Half Day Trek, a Full Day Trek and then the Junior or Adult and Teen Experience – each of these llama experiences has different age limits and pricing.

Hillview Llamas breed and train llamas first and foremost however they do offer bespoke treks on and off the Hillview Llama Farm premises tailored to meet your requirements. They can also arrange two hour farm visits for younger children.

Reddish Vale Farm, Country Park, Reddish Vale Rd, Stockport SK5 7HE
Reddish Vale Farm is home to a two llamas (and an alpaca) and whilst you can’t actually walk them, you can feed and stroke them whilst they are in their stables.

Mrs Dowsons Farm Park, Hawkshaw Fold, Longsight Rd, Blackburn BB2 7JA
Mrs Dowson’s Farm Park is about an hour from Manchester and is home a number of llamas. You can’t walk the llamas but you can feed and pet them. Feed is available at the entrance at a cost of £1.50 per bag. The llamas are super keen to be fed first thing in the morning and are very friendly (though we did witness one spitting at his field mate!)
