Dave visits Bath several times a year for work and this time we decided to take advantage of this and fit it in with a cheeky night away – Mum came to look after the kids for us and I kept Dave company on the long drive down from Manchester. The plan was that he’d drive down as normal on work time, take the afternoon off so we could explore Bath together and then I’d find somewhere to work the next morning while he did his visits.
We arrived in Bath about 1.30pm – too early to check into our hotel (Holiday Inn Express Bath) but we were able to leave the car in the car park and take a wander into town. The walk from Holiday Inn Express Bath into town is less than a mile and probably took us about 15 minutes. Our room was really comfortable but the hotel breakfast definitely left a lot to be desired and there’s probably nicer locations in Bath.
I’ve only been to Bath once before and we stayed in a different (and infinitely prettier) part of town so as we were walking into the city, it didn’t actually feel all that familiar. The weather wasn’t really conducive to wandering so we just headed straight to Boston Tea Party on Albert Street – this is one of Dave’s favourite destinations for breakfast when he’s staying at the Bath Travelodge and I can totally see why.
Boston Tea Party is a British family-owned independent café group headquartered at its first café in Park Street, Bristol, which was opened in 1995. The business has 22 cafés, predominantly in South West England. This West country born and family owned independent small café chain serves simply, well prepared food and drinks made with great ingredients.
Boston Tea Party on Alfred Street, Bath is a large and bright cafe with high ceilings, stained glass windows and a super relaxed vibe. (There is a much smaller Boston Tea Party on Kingsmead Square but we found this one felt a little small and bustley in comparison which wasn’t really the relaxed feel we were looking for.)
At Boston Tea Party, you just find yourself and table and then you can order food to your table via the QR code (super handy if, like me and at least 8 other people, you’re sat with your laptop out working!) or you can head up to the counter and place your order with the friendly staff.
On Tuesday afternoon Dave and I had lunch together – he ordered smoked salmon, avocado and scrambled eggs (£11.25) whilst I had the sweetcorn hash (£10.95) and a peach melba smoothie (£4.15). The sweetcorn corn hash comes with halloumi, poached eggs, avocado and tomato salsa, coriander and a Tabasco maple syrup – basically all of my favourite brunch items in one dish and it was every bit as tasty as I had hoped it might be. In fact I even came close to ordering it again the next day; I had enjoyed it so much. I resisted the urge though and had the quesadillas (£10.50) instead!
Wednesday morning, when Dave went off to work, I decided to return to Boston Tea Party for the morning. I tucked myself up in a corner at the back of the cafe, near a plug socket and sat there for about five hours – in which time I enjoyed a hot chocolate (recommend giving it a stir – it was one of those that I thought was a bit too milky but realised at the bottom of the drink when it was really chocolatey and that I’d slipped up!), a peach melba smoothie (it was so good the day before that I couldn’t resist), an apple juice and a stack of homemade hash browns – these were delicious and really good value at £4.50 – definitely worth adding some of those for the table on to your breakfast order! Oh and the aforementioned quesadilla!
I think it can feel a bit awkward sitting and working in a cafe at times but Boston Tea Party is clearly a popular venue for people needing to do a bit of work on their own or even having a meeting. Throughout the course of the morning, it got busier but there was always a table or two free so I didn’t feel that I was taking up room that could be used by people who were buying more than me! From mums with young babies, students catching up over brunch or around ten people at any one time with their laptops out, Boston Tea Party seems to appeal to a wide range of customers.
If you’re looking for somewhere for a relaxed brunch, a nice coffee or just a nice space to get some work done, Boston Tea Party hits the mark and I’ll definitely make sure to pop back in next time we’re down in Bath.
