Oh hello bonus May bank holiday – as if May didn’t already have all the best weekends already! The extra bank holiday for the King’s Coronation falls on Monday 8th May with the Coronation itself taking place on Saturday 6th May 2023.
The Coronation of King Charles III takes place at Westminster Abbey on Saturday 6th May 2023, followed by a live concert at Windsor Castle on Sunday 7th May 2023 – with acts including Lionel Ritchie, Take That and Katy Perry (you might have seen some big acts politely declined their invitations!). A Bank Holiday will then be held on Monday 8th May, when people will be encouraged to volunteer as part of the national “Big Help Out.”

Obviously the Coronation Celebrations aren’t quite on the same level as the Jubilee bank holiday weekend of last year, however there is still plenty going on in Manchester this Coronation bank holiday weekend.
So, if you’re looking for something to do in Manchester with the kids over the Coronation bank holiday weekend, cast your eyes over the list below. I’ve included events specifically celebrating the Coronation first and then non-King related bank holiday fun below (if, like my husband, you want to enjoy the bonus long weekend but couldn’t care less about the King!).

Coronation festival in Oldham Town Centre – Saturday 6th May 2023
Oldham council have announced a special festival in Oldham Town Centre on Saturday 6th May; where people will be able to watch the Coronation on a big screen, watch and listen to the live entertainment as a range of local performers have been invited to perform on a stage outside the Old Town Hall. The line up includes a range of “Best of British Music” tribute acts including Queen II, Gladness, Do It Like DUA, The Threetles, & Tania as Amy Winehouse. There will also be a whole host of family-friendly activities and strolling street performers.
A Royal Celebration at Oldham Libraries – Tuesday 2nd / Wednesday 3rd / Thursday 4th / Saturday 6th May 2023
Inspired by the King’s Coronation, a fairy tale princess has come to England for the Royal Coronation and she is calling on her subjects to help her to prepare for their very own royal party!
Expect games, crafts, magic tricks and much more (and don’t forget to wear your very best King, Queen, Prince or Princess outfit!)
Royal Celebration parties will be taking place at libraries across Oldham including Lees Library, Crompton Library, Failsworth Library, Chadderton Library, Fitton Hill Library and, Oldham Library & Gallery Oldham.
This coronation celebration event is aimed at a younger children aged 3 – 6 years old.
Book your child’s spot at this free Coronation event. (You only need to book a ticket for your child, however you are expected to stay and supervise.)
Watch the King’s Coronation on a big screen in Manchester Piccadilly Gardens – Saturday 6th May 2023
The King’s Coronation will be shown on a big screen in Manchester Piccadilly Gardens allowing people to come together and celebrate this historic event. More details of this Coronation event will be released nearer the time.
King Street Coronation Market, 35 King Street – Saturday 6th / Sunday 7th / Monday 8th May 2023
In celebration of King Charles’ Coronation, and taking full advantage of the bank holiday weekend, there will be a special Coronation themed market held inside 35 King Street include over twenty stalls by local artisans and makers. You’ll find local ales, infused gins, food stall and high tea as well face painting, crown making and an egg & spoon race for the kids.
King’s Coronation Party at LEGOLAND Discovery Centre – Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th May 2023
Join the team at LEGOLAND Discovery Centre for an awesome LEGO party to celebrate the King’s Coronation! There’ll be mocktails, LEGO mascot meet and greets, magic, photo opportunities and more!
Plus, enjoy all the usual fun of LEGOLAND Discovery Centre, including 2 awesome rides, 4D cinema and MINILAND
Party sessions are available each day from 9:30am – 12:30pm.

Kings Coronation Celebration at The Ashcroft – Sunday 7th May 2023
Celebrate the King’s Coronation at The Ashcroft with a free outdoor music event, food by Wood Fired Pizza and Bombay Brew Kebab Van.

Build a scarecrow competition at Haigh Woodland Park – Sunday 7th and Monday 8th May 2023
Commemorate the Coronation of King Charles III with a royal-themed scarecrow building competition at Haigh Woodland Park!
You will be provided with a build kit including a timber frame, straw and string. There will be some clothes available but you are advised to bring some old clothes and embellishments with you to make your Royal Scarecrow look as fantastic as possible! An old pair of tights and some stuffing is suggested for the head.
Your scarecrow must also be practical and be capable of scaring birds from crops for a season.
There are a limited number of tickets available priced at £12 per group (with a maximum of 6 participants). All proceeds from the entry fees will go towards the Friends of the Walled Kitchen Garden and be used to maintain and enhance the Garden.
Wilmslow’s Coronation Celebration – Sunday 7th May 2023
On Sunday 7th May, from 12 – 4pm, Wilmslow’s Coronation Celebration will be held on Bank Square, Grove Street, Green Lane and Hawthorn Lane.
There will be road closures in place to provide a safe space for families and friends to relax and enjoy the day, with music, entertainment, activities, community group stalls and seating. Activities and entertainment will include Punch and Judy, Crazy Golf, crafts and funfair-style games.

King’s Coronation at Time Square, Warrington – Saturday 6th May 2023
Head to Time Square for a live screening of the historical moment of King Charles III’s coronation. Get in the mood for a street party with drinks on offer from all Time Square retailers.
Seating is limited so it is recommended you arrive early to avoid disappointment.
Live coverage begins from 9am, Coronation from 11am and music until 4pm.

Head down to Tatton Park this Coronation bank holiday weekend to take part in the new Tiger who Came to Tea Garden Trail – pick up a trail pack and get hands on playing in Sophie’s Kitchen, collect some some teatime favourites along the way and snap a photo with the tiger!
Thw Tiger who Came to Tea Garden trail at Tatton Park runs until the end of summer so don’t worry if you can’t fit it in on the Coronation Weekend, there’s plenty of time!
