Car Insurance

Last Updated on 1 June 2026 by Colette

I’ve had several conversations about insurance over the last couple of weeks – mainly because my own car insurance is due for renewal next week and as always I shopped around for quotes.  This year, for the first time in quite a few years I managed to find a substantially lower quote and was pretty pleased.

Of course I celebrated this with a facebook status which led to an interesting conversation with a friend about how her son couldn’t feasibly learn to drive as the cost of insurance is just so unrealistic for young people these days.  I mean really what 18 year old can actually afford to pay thousands (and I’m not exaggerating here) to insure their first car for a year? It makes me wonder how my own children will ever be able to afford to learn to drive. I ended up having a similar conversation with a neighbour this morning about how her son was planning to learn to drive soon and I was totally amazed when she told me how much she’d had to pay to insure his little motorbike (twice my new car insurance quote in fact!)

I tend to use a standard comparison site myself as I’m just insuring my family car but these days you can get specialist providers for just about anything –  van insurance, older drivers, classic bike insurance and its certainly worth shopping around.  The reduction in my monthly premium this year can go towards the obscene cost of petrol instead!

  1. Car insurance is way too pricey.
I started to learn to drive about a year ago and had to stop. I have no started again. I have my 3rd lesson this weekend actually.
Luckily, My partner has a small van and i can get free insurance for that. The reason was because we're the same age – don't understand but can't complain!
