Father’s Day is on the horizon (Sunday 21st June this year in case you need a reminder) and I’m starting to think about Father’s day gifts . . . and how we might celebrate the day and the special men in our lives.
My Dad is notoriously difficult to buy for as, if he sees something he wants, he tends to just buy it! Last year I kitted my Dad out with new golf clothing which went down well – probably helped by the fact that I sent him the website link and asked him to choose what he would like which meant no surprises but also the he got exactly what he wanted! This year however, I’m still scratching my head for ideas!
For Dave, his Father’s Day gifts often depend heavily on how much money we’ve got – the answer this year is “not a lot” after enthusiastically booking two family holidays within a couple of months of one another!
Of course, as the kids get older, they have started to take a bit more responsibility for making Father’s Day special and especially for gift giving. They are starting to appreciate the joy of choosing and giving gifts for the people they care about – be it his favourite M&S biscuits (Outrageously Chocolatey Milk Chocolate Coated Speculoos Creams if you’re wondering), a new top or perhaps this year some new outdoor shoes as we realised during a particularly wet Sunday morning watching rugby, that his are no longer waterproof!
It’s quite likely that Father’s Day will be celebrated in a very low key fashion this year as we are out the day before for one of my best friend’s birthdays so I imagine a cooked breakfast and maybe a nice walk if the weather is kind to us. It’s highly likely Ben will be working but that’s where we are at at the moment!
For us Father’s Day feels less about expensive gifts and more about the little things. A relaxed day together, good food, a bit of family time and a few laughs along the way are probably what matter most. The older the kids get, the more thoughtful they become and honestly, seeing them make the effort to celebrate Dave in their own way is probably the nicest part of the whole day.
