I’ve always loved being near open expanses of water – be it a lake, a river or the sea so I’m a big fan of a reservoir walk.
Reservoir walks are often loops meaning there is a clear end which I think definitely helps when you’re trying to do longer walks with children – I’m not a big fan of a “there and back” walk to be honest. Another bonus with reservoir walks is that they are generally quite flat – though don’t take that as read as a couple of the routes on this post involve steps or hills.
I wanted to share some of our favourite reservoir walks to do with the kids – some are old favourites, others are more recent discoveries. I plan to add to this list of Reservoir walks over time as we discover new places too so if you have recommendations do let me know!
Since most of these spots are a bit out of town, it’s worth making sure you’ve got reliable mobile data while you’re out and about. I recently came across this helpful Saily eSIM review – a great option for hassle-free mobile connectivity when traveling, especially in rural areas.

Dovestones Reservoir
Dovestone Reservoir is right on the edge of Oldham and the Peak District National Park and thanks to it’s stunning views, easily accessible pathways and places to explore, it is extremely popular.

Entwistle
Entwistle Reservoir near Bolton is a beautiful expanse of water surrounded by woodland – the circular waterside path is popular with families, dog walkers and runners alike. Dave and I were wowed by the views and the kids loved exploring the woodland and finding various tiny waterfalls!

Greenbooth Reservoir
This is not a flat route by any means – even just the short route round the lowest reservoir encompasses uneven steps, climbs and muddy slopes. It is not remotely pushchair friendly. We’ve only done the Greenbooth Reservoir walk once – despite the gorgeous views we just found it really hard work however we did do this walk when it was brutally cold and very muddy, I think it would be a very different kettle of fish in the spring!
Ogden & Piethorne Reservoir
The Ogden and Piethorne Reservoirs are situated in the Piethorne Valley above Newhay, Milnrow and are easily accessible from Junction 21 of the M62. They make a great alternative to the ever popular Dovestones Reservoir walks.
