If you follow me on social media you may have seen that Ben and I got involved in some pretty serious junk modelling on Friday afternoon!
Cavendish Online challenged us to compare a new life insurance policy through Comarethemarket.com and Cavendish Online and, with the money we would save, create a mascot for Cavendish Online. . .
I hate insurance at the best of times – inputting all the information, comparing prices, worrying about the level of cover I need and if I’ve understood all the small print. Definitely not my favourite way to spend my time that’s for sure but a necessary evil. I often tend to go straight to a big comparison site hoping that they will do the leg work for me however the lesser known Cavendish Online work hard to make sure your insurance is cheaper than those providers who spend millions of pounds on advertising and gimmicky mascots like meerkats and robots (yes you know who I mean).
Actually doing the quotes didn’t take too long – I did pretty basic quotes based on the cover I think we have at the moment (I say think as Dave set up our last lot of life insurance so he has a far better idea than I do!)  The cheapest quote on Comparethemarket.com came out at £14.14 a month whereas Cavendish Online quoted £12.22 a month saving us just over £26 a year – certainly worth my time in doing the comparison!Â
So as I said, the challenge was to use the money we would save by taking out a policy with Cavendish Online and create them a mascot . . . Ben has been desperate to do some proper box craft for a while but I’ve kept putting him off, mainly due to just not having anywhere to save up the boxes etc however this time we went to town on it. I told him at the start of the week what he had to do to give him time to come with some ideas and writing a shopping list. He immediately decided he was going to make a robot and started to write a long list of the things he needed.
On Thursday night we went off to buy supplies and he was desperate to get started as soon as we got home but I pointed out that a) it was nearly bedtime and b) I had to get things organised first! I spent a little time turning the boxes inside out and re gluing them with my glue gun – the idea being that they would paint much better if they were plain cardboard.
Ben’s first task was to paint everything gold (we used a fabulous gold paint from Sainsburys which I highly recommend) – to the get the super gold finish we painted the boxes three times in total but I think the overall effect was well worth the effort.
When it came to assembling the parts of the robot I used hot glue again because it was quicker than sitting holding it all together whilst PVA dried and also because it was just stronger – this meant that whilst Ben had artistic direction on where things were stuck I did the actual assembly. What you can’t really see in the pictures is that Super Bot is also wearing a blue super hero cape!
