Dyson DC41 MK 2 #nohiddendust – Review

Way back in the Autumn I was invited down to London to be introduced to some of the latest and most exciting Dyson technology.

As someone with a pretty impressive dust allergy the hashtag of #nohiddendust really appeals!

The suction on this machine is immense – the lack of “power” doesn’t follow through into a lack of performance by any stretch of the imagination.  This was demonstrated for us with a head to head between the Dyson DC41 MK2 and another vacuum with more power.  The results are clear to be seen – from porridge oats to baking powder the Dyson had it nailed.

Of course I was keen to see if these results would be replicated in my own home.  With three small children, a dog and a husband who refuses to take his shoes off in the house there’s always plenty of muck and dust about.  It doesn’t matter how much cleaning and vacuuming I do I’m never confident my floor is properly clean.

We have a tiled floors in the bathrooms, carpet through the upstairs and a fabulous hardwearing laminate throughout the downstairs.  I do love our flooring downstairs – it withstands just about anything we throw at it (and yes I do mean literally) however my one minor gripe is that it’s never clean in the gaps.  I have to get down and clean down the gaps with a baby wipes (you can imagine this isn’t something I do particularly often).  I was really interested to see if the power of the Dyson would help with this!

The first time I used the new Dyson I decided to run it over the doormat.  Our doormat was looking particularly disgusting after a run of wintery weather and builders through  my front door.  To really put the Dyson to the test I actually vacuumed the mat with our old cleaner first so that it was supposedly “clean” . . . Pah.  I was simultaneously horrified and thrilled by the results:

We’ve been using our Dyson for a few months now and one of the things I’ve learned is that you can’t be lazy vacuuming with this machine – I know I’m not the only one that pushes things out of the way with the vacuum cleaner as you’re going along – this monster will just suck them up so you do need to prepare you room and actually pick things up of the floor!!  We’ve removed more than a few socks from our Dyson!!

With the impressive suction comes a lot of muck – you will be emptying your Dyson regularly however this is an easy task.  The cylinder unclips easily from the main body of the machine and empties over the bin with the push of a button.  Be aware that if you allow it to overfill, particularly with thick new carpet fluff, it won’t be quite so easy to empty.

What we love about it: 

* You can switch between hard floors & carpet cleaning with the flick of a button

* The brush thing for the carpet cleaning is really effective

* It’s easy to switch between using the vacuum as a stand up machine or the hose

* The cable wraps up neatly out of the way (though I do miss pushing a button to suck it up into the machine!)

* The cable is fabulously long and I can clean the whole of downstairs from one plug socket

* It moves really easily (though I’m still getting used to using the ball to it’s full potential)

* The balls allows the machine to lie surprisingly low for getting under tables and chairs (this is massively important with three little ones scattering their dinner all over the dining room floor)

* It’s not too noisy

* It’s so easy to empty – no massive cloud of dust in your face!

What we’re not so keen on: 

* Not all of the attachments can be fastened to the machine for storage so you’ll have to find homes for them!

* There’s a bit of a knack to getting it to stand upright when you’ve finished that can be annoying till you’ve figured it out

* The machine can be quite heavy compared to our old cleaner though is much lighter than other similar upright machines

* It’s not all that easy for cleaning the stairs (perhaps a good excuse to invest in the handheld Dyson too!) though I must admit I’ve got used to it now
* The extendable hose isn’t as flexible as I would like but then I’m used to a cylinder cleaner – the hose is constantly trying to retract itself which means you’re often fighting back against it.

So whilst there are niggles and irritations they’re more than worth it for the impressive cleaning power that the Dyson DC41 MK2 offers – oh and those grubby bits in between the laminate?  They’re looking much better thanks!
