I absolutely did not plan to start my Sunday morning by turning on my computer and working – but I need to tell you about Everybody’s Talking About Jamie! Chloe and I watched the film together quite a while ago now and absolutely loved it so when I saw it was on stage at The Lowry this September, I had to book us tickets! Chloe should actually have been at Scout camp this weekend but chose a night at the theatre with Mum and Aunty Custard instead!
“Following a record-breaking three-year West End residency, sold-out UK & Ireland Tour and Amazon studios award-winning film, the smash-hit and critically acclaimed musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie returns on a major UK & Ireland Tour from September 2023“

I hadn’t realised that The Lowry was actually the starting point for the Everybody’s Talking About Jamie Tour – but that means that if you missed it in Manchester, there’s plenty more opportunities to see it across the country over the coming year!
Based on a true story, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie tells the story of sixteen year old Jamie New who lives on a council estate in Sheffield. Jamie isn’t like everyone else in his school and this musical sensation tells the story of him finding his way – of him overcoming prejudice and being accepted for who he truly is.
The music, the choreography and the costumes all add to the feel-good-fabulousness that is Everybody’s Talking About Jamie – we laughed out loud, we winced and we really felt – we lived Jamie’s joy when he got his first pair of killer heels, we were thrown back to our own school days and careers meetings (remember those psychometric tests that we did that told us what jobs we should have – mine said I should be a teacher!) and the general discomfort of our teenage years and our hearts broke for Jamie and his mother when his Dad proved himself to be nothing more than a selfish bigot.
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is a story of acceptance – both self-acceptance and that of being accepted by your peers and your community. Jamie learns that living as his truest self is the route to happiness!
“Jamie is an absolute vibe!” – Chloe
The whole cast are amazing – Shobna Gulati as Ray (Jamie’s Mum’s best friend) is utterly hilarious (if you’ve seen the film, she actually played the same role on screen as well) and Hayley Tamaddon made a cracking Miss Hedge – her facial expressions when she was interacting with Jamie’s class mates had me creased and her dance moves – well if you saw her on Dancing on Ice, you’ll know what to expect. And, Ivano Turco as Jamie – just fabulous!

Everyone’s Talking About Jamie is supposedly suitable for children age 5+ but I have to disagree – the language is pretty strong and I honestly think at 5, much of the storyline would go right over their head (though in parts this is probably not a bad thing). Personally I think top end of primary school would be a better recommendation – age 10+. Chloe (12) absolutely loved it last night and I do think had I taken Amy (10) she’d have really enjoyed it too.
Remaining Everybody’s Talking About Jamie Tour Dates:
Although Everybody’s Talking About Jamie at The Lowry finishes tonight, the tour continues right through to the middle of July next year so there’s plenty of opportunities to find a theatre near you and go see it – and I really recommend you do! (I’m almost tempted to book to go see it again!)
Bradford – 1st to 6th July 2024 | Leicester – 15th July to 20th July 2024
