Getting the perfect outfit for adventures with your JD sport voucher

Last Updated on 21 January 2025 by Colette

I honestly think that being appropriately dressed for your adventures is one of the most important factors in ensuring everyone enjoys their day – wearing a pair of fresh white kicks on a muddy hike means you’re going to spend the whole walk worrying about ruining your shoes rather than enjoying the fresh air, the scenery and the challenge of your hike, similarly heading out in the cold without the right sort of layers on is just asking for sad faces and lots of complaining.

When I look back on some of our early outdoor experiences with the kids – we were woefully underprepared. We didn’t know how to dress to keep ourselves warm with base layers, we didn’t appreciate the benefits of a decent pair of walking boots over wellies, we didn’t have good waterproofs or the right coats. Over time we learned and we invested in better kit and it honestly makes such a difference. The right kit doesn’t have to be expensive or stylish, but it does need to do the job of keeping you warm and dry if the weather is cold, wet and windy or equally to keep you cool and comfortable on warmer days!

As well as being practical, having clothing that makes you feel good is also going to encourage you to get out and enjoy your adventures – I have some outdoor clothes that do the job of keeping me warm and dry but I hate wearing them because I just feel really scruffy in them because the fit is wrong or the colours don’t really suit me.

There is definitely a balance to strike between looking good and practically – remember those fresh white trainers I mentioned earlier? They’re going to look good on instagram before you set off on your walk and they’re going to be absolutely trashed by the time you come home. But a bright pop of colour from your waterproof coat or cosy hat – they’re still going to look good when you’ve finished your day out!

Whether you’ve got a JD Sport Voucher burning a hole in your pocket or you just want to level up your outdoor gear, here’s five tips for choosing the best outfit to suit your adventures, ensuring you stay comfortable, practical, and stylish:

1. Prioritise Comfort and Fit

When choosing adventure gear, comfort is key. Opt for items that fit well, especially when it comes to base layers, which should be snug without being restrictive. Look for breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics that move with you, keeping you comfortable all day long. Make sure you choose shoes or boots that are supportive for your specific adventure—hiking boots for rugged terrain, or comfortable, durable trainers for a casual day of exploration. Avoid anything too tight or too loose, as it can lead to discomfort on long days out.

2. Layering Is Essential

The right layers can make or break your adventure day – rather then wearing a bulky coat, layers are a much more practical and effective way to stay warm and comfortable. Start with a good moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your skin. Then, add an insulating mid-layer, such as a fleece or softshell jacket, which can be easily removed if the weather warms up. Top it off with a waterproof, breathable outer layer. JD Sports has a great selection of weatherproof jackets and outerwear from brands like The North Face and Nike, offering both style and protection against the elements.

3. Invest in Durable Footwear

If you’re heading outdoors, having the right footwear is non-negotiable. Hiking boots with good grip and ankle support are essential for rough terrain, while a versatile pair of trainers can be great for more urban adventures Look for shoes that are lightweight but sturdy, and ensure they’re waterproof if you’re expecting rain or crossing streams. Don’t forget to break them in before your trip – blisters are a sure-fire way to ruin your adventures!

4. Add Fun Pops of Colour

While functionality is important, who says your outdoor outfit can’t be stylish too? Adding bright, fun colours to your outfit is an easy way to brighten up your adventure gear, especially when the weather is dull or dreary. A vibrant waterproof jacket, a cosy hat, or even a bold pair of trainers can inject personality into your outfit, making you feel more confident and ready to embrace your adventure – and they look great in photos too!

5. Consider Versatility and Easy Maintenance

When you’re out exploring, you’ll want to wear clothes that can handle dirt, water, and mud without requiring constant care. Look for materials that are easy to clean and quick to dry. Whether you’re walking through wet grass, climbing rocks, or running along the beach, your clothing should be able to handle it all while still looking good.

By choosing the right clothing, you’ll ensure that you’re not only ready for your adventure, but you’ll also feel comfortable, confident, and ready to tackle anything that comes your way. Whether it’s a hike in the mountains or a casual walk around town, the right outfit can make all the difference to your experience.

What’s your favourite bit of outdoor clothing? I couldn’t be without a decent base layer and I love a bright hat but struggle to find them to fit my big head!
