As the weather has taken a very definite autumnal turn, thoughts turn to being wrapped up against the elements and dressed appropriately for outdoor adventures. In fact just last week we got a letter home from school encouraging parents to ensure their children are dressed in suitable shoes and coats for the weather.
With that in mind I wanted to share with you some of our favourite outdoor clothing brands that we’ve tried over the years.
Muddy Puddles
I first came across Muddy Puddles nearly a decade ago when the school I was working in invested in a whole class set of Bib & Brace overalls for Nursery / Reception classes to use and I immediately went home and ordered one for Ben who was just a toddler at the time. Those Bib & Brace overalls were passed down through all three children and then on to another family to make use of them too! A few years ago we tried out some Muddy Puddles Puddlefleece trousers for Ben, and again they’ve been passed down through all three children and now Amy wears them every now and again. A couple of years Chloe and Amy were both sent Puddleflex outerwear items – both of which were worn for almost two years before being passed on to a friend. For autumn 2020, both girls are wearing Muddy Puddles Ecosplash waterproof jackets. (Muddy Puddles also do a range of swimwear too!)
When you buy Muddy Puddles – you get good quality clothing that’s well thought out, fit for purpose but still looks good too. These are clothes to invest in and hand down through your family and friends!
Reima
Reima are a Finnish brand with 75 years of experience in designing clothes to keep kids on the move whatever the weather. We first tried Reima almost two years ago when all three children spent the colder months wrapped up in Reima winter coats and then this summer, when the weather couldn’t always be trusted, they wore Reima 3-in-1 waterproof jackets which have seen them right through into the back to school period.
Grass & Air
Grass & Air are a relatively new Manchester based brand keen to make sure that joy, discovery and adventure are at the heart of their brand – as such their clothing not only performs beautifully but looks fabulous too!
Amy and Chloe have been wearing their Grass & Air rain coats for about 18 months now and they’re still going strong!
Bogs Boots
As a family, we love our Bogs boots – dry, comfortable and warm boots which have withstood everything we have thrown at them. The kids have worn their boots for festivals, woodland walks and schools runs – and, as has become a bit of a theme to this post, they have lasted well beyond the point of them being outgrown!
Keen Footwear
Chloe and I got a pair of Keen walking boots each this time last year and from the moment I slipped my foot into them, they’ve been an absolute joy. Warm, comfortable and supportive, I rather feel that I’m out and about in my slippers! I’ve worn them on the school run, to the beach and to festivals. The customer service is top notch too – after I noticed a hole in one of my shoes at the end of summer, I mentioned it to them on instagram and they had a replacement pair out to me within days!
Update 2021 – I’ve replaced my original Keen boots with a new pair: Women’s Terradora II hiking boots
Tog24
Tog24 are a Yorkshire based brand – so that basically means they can do no wrong . . . I’m joking, actually, one of the main reasons I love Tog24 when it comes to outdoor gear is that their sizing generous and pretty inclusive. There’s nothing worse than outdoor clothing that is just a bit too small for comfort, or that you can’t layer easily. My current favourite jacket is a Tog24 softshell – it’s smart but warm and waterproof – the perfect Autumn / Spring jacket for school runs and longer walks (I’m tempted to invest in the longer version too!).
I also recommend checking out Decathlon and Mountain Warehouse for great value basics – all three kids have had walking shoes from Decathlon and our fleece lined, winter walking trousers are from Mountain Warehouse (You can also get cashback at Mountain Warehouse via TopCashBack).
