It has been said many times before, but dressing appropriately for the weather and your outdoor adventures will make a world of difference to how much you enjoy your trip out – be it the school run, the local park or a long dog walk on the beach.
We are long time fans of Muddy Puddles – and when I say long time, I mean it – I don’t think Ben was even 2 years old when I invested in his first Muddy Puddles bib and brace waterproofs!
This autumn the girls are rocking matching Muddy Puddles Ecosplash fleece lined jackets.
What’s so special about the Muddy Puddles Ecosplash collection?
The Muddy Puddles Ecosplash collection is an environmentally-friendly range of waterproofs for children featuring waterproof jackets, puddlesuits and trousers. The outer fabrics are cleverly made from recycled plastic bottles that would have otherwise have gone to landfill – however, you’d never know the fabric had ever been anything other than a gorgeous waterproof coat. Of course, being Muddy Puddles, everything is made to last. Almost every item of Muddy Puddles clothing we’ve had has served at least two of our children before being passed on to a friend for more outdoor adventuring!
Most importantly, the Ecosplash jacket is super waterproof – up to 5000mm apparently – I don’t even really know what that means but I trust it to keep my kids dry in a Mancunian downpour! Whilst the jacket is super waterpoof, the breathable fabrics mean it isn’t sweaty (unlike my own yellow raincoat which I often overheat in!)
The Ecosplash jacket isn’t bulky at all so it will squash down nicely into your bag. When we first arrived on the beach this morning it was quite cold and blowy – the girls were protected and comfortable in their jackets but once the sun came out Chloe tied hers around her waist and I chucked Amy’s into my rucksack.
The jacket is available in four brightly coloured, unisex designs – my girls chose to match this time (though I do think the days of twining are numbered as it was definitely more for Amy’s benefit than Chloe’s!). I’m a big fan of a brightly coloured jacket – too many times I’ve gone for the smart, navy option and then regretted it when I couldn’t lay my eyes on my kids in the park or school playground. In addition to the bright blue, raindrop pattern, the jacket features a contrasting fleecy lining, zip and binding on the sleeves as well as reflective detailing to increase visibility on grey, rainy days or darker evenings (anyone else really not looking forward to those?)
Both girls are in love with the super soft Sherpa lining on the hood – and who can blame them! We’ve found that the hood stays up really well and the top of the zip tucks into a soft fleece cover to keep little chins protected. The cosy fleece lining in the main body of the coat and the soft outer fabric means the EcoSplash jacket is comfortable to wear – there’s nothing worse than a stiff and restrictive coat when you’re adventuring! (Oh and the pockets are fleece lined too – perfect for keeping little fingers warm on cold days, or just storing treasures in!)
And finally, there’s no need to panic about ruining this coat by getting it covered in sand or falling in a dirty puddle (standard behaviour for my three!) the Ecosplash jacket is machine washable (just make sure you let it drip dry, this isn’t one for the heated airer).
The girls’ jackets come in sizes from 18-24 months right through to 11-12 years costing £45 for all sizes.

Hey, I’ve been enjoying your blog Colette. I am trying to decided between getting this coat of the insulated puddleflex for my two girls but can’t decided. They both have massive thick parkas for the depths of winter but want something more wearable for now-late autumn! How do you think they compare?

I think Amy would tell you the new Ecosplash because she loves the sherpa hood, Chloe would probably go with the Puddleflex because it looks more grown up! There’s things I love about both of them but I think the Puddleflex might just win for me.
