It is now almost three years since we first started our extension project. One which was finally just about finished at the end of last year. And by finished I mean that my Dad has done all the “big stuff” that needs paying for. There’s still plenty of bits and pieces to do but these are mainly things that Dave and I need to sort out ourselves.
So, having not written anything about our house in ages I thought I’d share with you the most complete room in our house. . . welcome to our downstairs toilet!
The downstairs toilet was one of the things that was finished last – although we had “moved into” most of the extension by Christmas 2014, there was still plenty to be done and for a long time we just kept the doors shut on several rooms which were just plastered out and left till Dad had more time and crucially till we had more money.
Our downstairs toilet is small but perfectly formed so I was keen to keep the space as light and bright as possible. For this reason the walls are painted brilliant white. I’d decided quite some time ago that I wanted to go with a yellow and grey colour scheme – much of our home had been very monochrome up until this point and I felt that the small space of the downstairs toilet was a chance to be brave!
Thanks to pinterest I knew I wanted floating shelves above the toilet to allow for some storage space but more for the sake of adding interest to the room. Thankfully Dave is pretty handy and was able to make the shelves for me so they are a perfect fit and spaced exactly how I wanted them.
Once the shelves were up and painted I was able to unleash a whole array of yellow and grey accessories that I’d stored away. Because I’d bought things as I’d seen them rather than with a real idea of how they’d look on the finished shelves I was nervous that perhaps they wouldn’t work well together but I’m SO pleased with the overall look. As you can see from the picture above there’s still a couple of gaps to be filled as and when I find the right things.
This bright yellow “hello” came from Next and cost around £16. We saw it as we were walking through the home department one afternoon and I couldn’t stop thinking about it so popped in on the way home and snatched it up! I think it’s my favourite thing in the downstairs toilet!
This little faux succulent came from John Lewis and cost around £8 – they have a great range of little faux plants and I have a few of them dotted around the darker areas of our home where the real thing just wouldn’t survive.
The yellow box was a ZARA home sale bargain, I’d seen it ages before but refused to pay full price so when spotted it reduced to under £10 I grabbed it! As well as being a gorgeous colour, it’s a handy little hiding place for sanitary bits & bobs!
I’ve always loved the idea of having some books in the downstairs toilet so have been keeping my eyes peeled for ones with yellow covers. The Ladybird “How it works: The Mum” was one I already had on my book shelf after being sent it as a gift and I got “Get Happy!” in Liverpool back in March – it’s full of really positive, practical tips for happiness!
This yellow tumbler was also from ZARA home and I think it’s actually meant to be a drinking glass. The grey frame cos a few pounds form NEXT and the “Wash your hands” print was from ETSY.
This little grey pot is actually a scented candle from the Sainsburys Shore range – obviously I have no intention of lighting candles in my downstairs loo, I just really liked the grey & cream pot that the candle is in !
This vase of yellow tulips has moved around the house over the last few years but it has definitely found it’s home perched on the boxing in next to the toilet!
There’s no chance of running out of toilet roll – this grey and cream chevron basket was a spur of the moment purchase in Aldi.
It’s actually really difficult to take pictures in such a small room so I can’t really show you the full effect of the space but hopefully you can get a taste for one of my favourite places in our house!
I love that yellow hello, I keep seeing it in Next but have managed to resist so far… I think you might have just tipped me over the edge! ? We are desperate for a downstairs loo – that is on our to do list at some point this year. I just love yellow and greys. Gorgeous x
This is so new! I this yellow is such a lovely colour for toilets and bathroom. I really like your “Hello” too. I haven’t read “How it works: The Mum” yet. I am intrigued. Very excited to see the rest of the house when it is finished. 🙂 x
This looks lovely and i adore the pop of the yellow, ive just redone my dining room in grey and yellow so trying to find some pieces for there too. I love the Sainsburys shore range but it does look a little too bathroom but once i get round to decorating that we will no doubt be using some pieces in there too!

Hi Colette, I love yellow and grey so I was excited to spot your post in front of mine in the #HOMEETC linky. We decorated our new extension in Grey and Yellow and brilliant white walls, too. As you can see from my home etc post, we have finally finished it off with a Yellow Wall clock!
I love that you’ve collected little pieces along the way, in anticipation of the decorating stages and the things you’ve chosen are right up my street too. I love succulents – I’m not green fingered so at least they have some hope of surviving in my home!

Aaaah Colette — this is my FAVE colour!!! I’m partial to a bit of yellow! Taking pics in a small space is definitely tricky — I felt the same with our staircase gallery — trying to get a pic of the whole space was impossible!!
