I don’t know about you but I was a pretty die hard Kylie fan in the late 80s – I remember donning a leotard (I must have borrowed it from someone as I can’t see why else I would have owned one) and preforming some sort of bonkers dance routine to a Kylie song in a school assembly – I feel like we had practiced it for weeks in the playground at playtime and I’m quite sure it was utterly dreadful. But anyway, I was most definitely in “Camp Kylie” whereas my little sister was very much a Jason Donovan fan.
Over the years my taste in music has become decidedly less “pop” but that didn’t stop me being really excited about heading into town to take in a performance of I Should Be So Lucky on its world premiere run at Opera House Manchester from Thursday 2nd to Saturday 25th November 2023 before setting off on tour around the UK.
My girl has been a bit fed up this week so a girlie trip to the theatre couldn’t have been better timed – I knew she was unlikely to know any of the songs but I also know that she loves feel good musical and I Should Be So Lucky most definitely ticks that box!
Packed with iconic Stock Aitkin Waterman pop classics, I Should Be So Lucky tells the story of Ella and Nathan – of their wedding day jitters and honeymoon japes. With themes of love, friendship, jealousy and a huge dollop of fun and humour thrown in, this brand new musical from directed by stage and screen legend Debbie Isitt (the mind behind the hit Nativity! franchise) and choreographed by Jason Gilkison (creative director for Strictly Come Dancing) is an absolute joy.
I had expected the show to be really cheesy – and it was – but in the best possible way. The familiar (and mostly long-forgotten) songs put a huge smile on my face and the characters were completely loveable and utterly hilarious.
Chloe took a particular liking to Ash, the loveable best friend and wingman of Nathan and we both agreed that Michael (I’m not sure if he was a gay best friend or a family member) was just a vibe and Nan was amazing. And of course, Lucie-Mae Sumner as Ella, was fabulous. We loved the bonus surprise that Kylie Minogue herself appears digitally through the show!
I couldn’t get over the incredible creativity involved in writing a whole new story to fit with what is essentially quite a random collection of songs about love and heartbreak – but honestly not once did the music feel shoehorned in – it all just flowed perfectly. The story was heart warming, funny and occasionally surprising – and the familiarity of the music just added to enjoyment.
Chlo and I were crying with laughter throughout the performance and I went to bed with a full medley of Kylie songs from my childhood running through my head.
I should be so lucky? Yes you should. Get it booked.
