Since getting Poppy, we’ve become much more aware of local dog friendly venues where we can take a puppy along too! When we had Thomas we didn’t tend to take him out for lunch with us – probably because the kids were really young too – but with Poppy we are really aware of wanting to include her in our plans where possible. Long dog walks punctuated with a lazy lunch and a pint are always a win right?
From simply being dog-friendly and welcoming our four legged friends, to those who go all out with a specially tailored dog menu, I thought it would be a good idea to collect together those dog friendly venues we’ve tried both in Manchester city centre and the wider Greater Manchester area. This is a post I intend to add to over time so we are always open to recommendations!

Ezra & Gil, 20 Hilton St, Manchester M1 1FR
Ezra & Gil in the Northern Quarter of Manchester has been a firm favourite of ours for a couple of years now – I discovered it quite by accident with Kirsty one Sunday morning and didn’t actually realise until earlier this year that they are a dog-friendly venue. I guess with not having a dog, I just wasn’t really paying attention!
So far Poppy has been into Ezra & Gil to make use of the fresh water they always have available for pups while Dave was picking up a take away order for us, but we have yet to eat in with her.

Grandpa Greene’s Luxury Ice Cream Parlour, Ward Ln, Diggle, Oldham OL3 5JT
Grandpa Greene’s Ice Cream Parlour in Saddleworth is perfectly situated for a stop off with your dog – Dave and I had a really lovely walk up the canal from Greenfield, lunch at Grandpa Greene’s and then back down again – I think we covered just over four miles. There is ample car parking at Grandpa Greene’s if you’d rather start & finish your walk there or if indeed you don’t want to walk anywhere at all but just want to take your dog on a brunch date!
Grandpa Greene’s are so dog-friendly that they actually have a special dog menu offering up free bowls of water, dishes of sausage or bacon (or even both if you’re feeling fancy) as well as dog ice cream – which Poppy wholeheartedly recommends.

Diggle Lock, Unit 5, Warth Mill, Huddersfield Rd, Diggle, Oldham OL3 5PJ
Just across the canal from Grandpa Greene’s you’ll find Diggle Lock – a cosy but modern little place serving up chai lattes, french toast and everything you’d want for the perfect lazy brunch. The first time Mich and I went to Diggle Lock, we rocked up on a whim and stayed there for about 4 hours – assuming they’re not busy, the won’t move you on. At peak times (basically all weekend!), you’re going to want to book and be prepared to have your table for a limited amount of time.
Chloe and I are big fans of the pancakes, you should definitely try the cakes from Saddleworth Brownies and its absolutely worth checking out the specials board.
Dogs are welcome at Diggle Lock, and even get their own special menu of treats. We’ve yet to actually take Poppy but I’ve never been in Diggle Lock where there isn’t at least another two dogs in there (which is worth bearing in mind if your dog gets a bit excitable around other dogs – Diggle Lock is pretty cosy so you’re going to struggle to avoid each other!)
Woodhouse Gardens, 48 Medlock Rd, Failsworth, Manchester M35 9WN
Woodhouse Gardens is a proper “pub” to my mind. Located in Woodhouses Village not to far from Daisy Nook Country Park, this traditional wood-beamed pub has a huge, grassy beer garden and kids’ play area. The menu is fairly typical pub food done well – delicious steaks, huge burgers and a lovely desert menu. Dogs are welcome in the bar area and the pub garden but not in the restaurant itself which is fair enough! The staff at Woodhouse Gardens are most definitely dog people in our experience – they always make a big fuss of Poppy and ensure she has a bowl of fresh water!
The Black Ladd, 487 Buckstones Rd, Shaw, Oldham OL1 4ST
Much like Woodhouse Gardens, The Black Ladd is a proper old school pub. We’ve been a couple of times now – once with Poppy and once with Amy. Dogs are welcome in the bar area, and all the staff made a right fuss of Poppy! We sat in a corner and very much enjoyed a mixed grill (Dave) and a delicious steak (me) – Poppy may or may not have benefited from some off cuts! I recommend booking a table as it can get quite busy. If the weather is nice, it’s definitely worth sitting out at the front of the pub as the views across the countryside are something else.
Altrincham Market, Greenwood St, Altrincham WA14 1SA
Alty Market has a mix of indoor and outdoor seating – dogs are very welcome in both areas and the market hall itself. One of the things I really like about Altrincham Market is the wide range of food available – you don’t just have to pick one type of food or one stall – everything is ordered on the app and brought to your table as it is ready so you can order from wherever you want! (The frozen margaritas come highly recommended!)

And a few other suggestions which we haven’t tried ourselves yet but have on good authority they are worth a visit!
Albert’s Schloss, 27 Peter St, Manchester M2 5QR
This popular German-inspired restaurant and bar located in the heart of Manchester’s city centre is dog-friendly but only if you’ve got a small dog and before 7pm. You are asked to let them team know in advance if you are bringing a dog along so you can be seated in a dog friendly area.
The Oast House, The Avenue, Courtyard, Manchester M3 3AY
This unique restaurant and bar in Spinningfields is another dog-friendly venue in Manchester city centre. Dogs are welcome both inside and out. (More details here)
All the details in this post are correct to the best of my knowledge but it’s always worth calling ahead and checking in advance if they are dog-friendly and if there are any specific rules or restrictions.
