We’ve just come home from our first family holiday abroad. 17 hours travelling is a long way with three kids squashed together in the back of a Ford Mondeo Estate and a boot packed to the rafters with all the essentials required for family adventures. We had hoped that we would have bought a new, bigger car ready for our holiday but it wasn’t too be.
|Ready to set off to France!|
We’ve had our Mondeo for about three and a half years now and it has served us well but it really isn’t big enough for our family of five and it is starting to struggle – we’ve had a few trips to the garage over the last couple of months and they’re getting more expensive.
Up until now we’ve always bought second hand cars, privately and for cash scraped together from somewhere or other (often with the help of my parents!) However now we’re looking to get something newer, and thus more expensive so have started to consider car finance – specifically car hire purchase where you basically pay monthly instalments until the end of the contract and then either swap the car for a new one or pay a lump sum to own the car outright. Of course another option is to take out an unsecured personal loan which means the loan isn’t tied to the car or it’s value so you could borrow more (or less) if need be which means your loan could work out to be better value in the long run. It’s all about researching your options and working out what’s best for your own personal circumstances.
For now we’re going to keep our trusty Mondeo going for a bit longer whilst we get ourselves into a bit of a better position financially to make such a big purchase however this doesn’t stop us looking wishfully at other, bigger vehicles.
Top of the list is a Ford Galaxy, we test drove one a while back and I fell in love with the amount of space and flexibility it offers. I also rather liked the enormous panoramic sunroof! (Though Dave tells me this is a luxury and not something he can guarantee I will get – spoil sport!)
Dave has also recently suggested that a Citroen C4 Picasso might be a good option – it’s smaller than the Galaxy and easier on the juice but still provides the extra seats and space which we need. I suppose we shall just need to drive them both when the time comes and see which we prefer (and of course consider which turns out to be better value at the time!)
I’d love to know if you have other suggestions for our next car? Fingers crossed we’ll have one next summer!
