When I was little my Grandad always used to pick up pennies off the floor when he saw them, mostly it would just be coppers but occasionally he’d strike it lucky and find a whole pound! I don’t think by any stretch that he just walked along staring at the floor but he always seemed to notice them and wouldn’t dream of leaving them lying there. He would save them all up and then split them between me, Nic and our two cousins (or give it to charity once a year when we were older).
Since he died, Nic and I always pick up money when we see it and thank him for it – I seem to find notes at significant times like having just moved house or had Ben. Nic even found an unmarked envelope of cash in the rain once. So Ben now does the same, when he spots money on the floor he picks it up for his money box and thanks Grandad Joe for it. It brought Aunty Nic to tears the first time she heard him do it.
Ben never got to meet my Grandad (or in fact any of my grandparents) so its important to me that we share stories and memories with him. We never called him “Grandad Joe” ourselves, he was just Grandad but my Dad is now Grandad (or Grand to Chlo) so he has become Grandad Joe to avoid confusion when we talk to Ben about him.

aww thats cute, my great grandad was always picking up coins as well xx
That's so lovely that they thank your Grandad for it! We were always taught to pick up pennies 'see a penny, pick it up, all day long you'll have good luck!' I can't see a penny without that going through my head now! 🙂
What a sweet tradition 🙂 We always do the find a penny pick it up and all day long you'll have good luck thing too 🙂
I love this post. It is so important for us to remember special times with our famillies. It really is the little things that stick with you. My Grandad Gordon (We just called him Gordy and up to being about 7 I thought that everyone had a Grandma and a Gordy…) Anyway, Gordy made the BEST toast in the world. He used to stick a fork in a slice of bread and hold it up to the old grill fires they used to have in the old council houses. Then he'd spread real 'best' butter on it and we'd eat it in front of the fire. Thanks for the post, and for reminding me of my Grandad Gordy. x 🙂
This is a beautiful memory. Thank you so much for sharing 🙂
Awww – lovely post – but oh my gosh – those tomatoes!!!!
What a lovely post, and a wonderful way to remember your grandad xx
What a nice post.
This is so nice – and it made me realize I haven't talked to my little ones about my grandpa who died before they were born.
Lovely story – if you look after the pennies, the pounds look after themselves.
