A gentleman’s afternoon tea is a variation of afternoon tea generally designed to appeal to supposedly “manlier” tastes and appetites – expect to see mini pork pies, scotch eggs and mini Yorkshire puddings served with a beer or whisky based cocktail rather than prosecco. Whilst this is all very stereotypical, there is nothing to stop anyone ordering a gentleman’s afternoon tea – if you fancy pork pies rather then crustless smoked salmon sandwiches, who is anyone else to question it!
Currently, gentleman’s afternoon tea options are lacking in Manchester. Many places are choosing to focus on vegetarian / vegan options (a post for another day!) and I guess you can only have so many variations of afternoon tea on the go at any one time!

King Street Townhouse, 10 Booth St, Manchester M2 4AW
King Street Townhouse is known for its stylish setting. They occasionally offer themed afternoon teas, including options that cater to a more masculine taste. Currently their “savoury afternoon tea” fits the bill I think. Their Savoury High Tea currently includes a selection of savoury items such as mini Yorkshire pudding with braised beef short rib, katsu chicken scotch egg, sun-blushed tomato arancini with basil pesto, a battered fish roll with spiced tartare sauce, and a pork & blue cheese sausage roll, finished with a cheese selection rather than cakes!

Richmond Tea Rooms, 46 Sackville St, Manchester M1 3WF
Richmond Tea Rooms are well known for their Alice in Wonderland themed afternoon tea in a beautiful Alice in Wonderland themed setting – there are several variations of the afternoon tea including “Tweedle’s afternoon tea” which features a mini beer battered fish and chips and a homemade Cumberland scotch egg – meaning it hits the mark as a more “gentleman’s afternoon tea”.

Cafe Football, offers a “not-so traditional afternoon tea experience” called “a game of two halves” – expect mini fish & chips, a sausage roll swirl and a mini Yorkshire pudding with beef and gravy as well as sandwiches and a mini beer on the “home menu” with the “away menu” being more focussed on cakes and sandwiches!

Albion Farm, Oldham Rd, Delph, Saddleworth OL3 5RQ
I’m also just going to give a shout out to the afternoon tea at Albion Farm which is definitely more savoury focused than your average afternoon tea which, whilst subject to change, on the day I visited featured a tiny steak pasty, possible the best sausage roll I’ve ever eaten and a slice of cheese pie alongside three delicious sandwiches and a selection of cakes!
Afternoon Tea at Albion Farm is priced at £26pp to include filter coffee or tea (you can add a glass of Prosecco or a bottle of beer for £5). Bookings must be made 24 hours in advance and can be booked for Monday – Saturday, 2pm – 4pm. To book, you need to call 01457 874366 and choose the Cafe extension.
