Forestry England are launching a brand new woodland adventure for 2026 – from Tuesday 27th January, families can take part in the brand-new Room on the Broom trail, bringing the much-loved story to life in forests across the UK including Delamere Forest.
Based on the bestselling book (and our family favourite) by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, this enchanting trail celebrates the story’s 25th anniversary and promises a spellbinding outdoor experience for young explorers and their grown-ups.
The Room on the Broom trail is a self-guided woodland activity trail designed especially for families with younger children (though to be honest I think we might have to go just for the nostalgia!). As you follow the route through the forest, you’ll help the Witch and her friends on a magical journey, completing activities and learning about nature along the way. The Room on the Broom Trail is very much designed to be fun rather than rushed, making it ideal for little legs.
It’s a brilliant way to encourage kids to explore the outdoors while staying fully immersed in a story they already love.

To make the experience even more special, families can purchase a Room on the Broom trail pack for £4.
Each pack includes:
- A themed lanyard
- Magic spell cards
- Stickers
- A pencil
- A pop-out craft to make your own witchy wand
You don’t need the pack to enjoy the trail, but it does add an extra interactive element which I find helps to keep kids focused (and distracted from tired legs) as well as giving them something to take home afterwards.
Is the Room on the Broom Trail at Delamere Forest pushchair friendly?
The Room on the Broom Trail is about a one mile walk through Delamere Forest – on a dry day it’s surprisingly pushchair friendly but you might struggle if it was a bit muddy.
Why the Room on the Broom Trail is good for families?
Like previous Julia Donaldson trails, this one is designed with families firmly in mind.
Why it works well:
- Suitable for preschool and primary-age children
- Encourages outdoor exploration without feeling like “learning”
- Can be done at your own pace
- Easy to combine with a picnic or café visit
It’s ideal for a relaxed family walk where kids stay engaged the whole way round.

The Room on the Broom trail continues the long-running partnership between Forestry England and Magic Light Pictures, which began back in 2014.
Previous trails at Delamere Forest have included: The Stick Man Trail, Gruffalo Spotters Trail, Gruffalo Orienteering and the original Gruffalo Trail as well as a Zog Trail and a Wallace and Gromit trail amongst others.
