[I am updating this post regularly with suggestions of SEN friendly Father Christmas visits and festive activities in Manchester in 2026 as information & reviews become available but do check with individual venues!]
As I’ve been updating my lists of places to visit Father Christmas in Manchester, I’ve noticed that a couple of places are hosting separate, more SEN friendly, events that might be more appropriate for children who are sensitive to lights and sounds or who might benefit from having less people around and a generally calmer Santa experience. I thought it would be helpful to pull these together into one list of SEN friendly grottos and festive experiences in Manchester this year!

If you haven’t decided where to take your children to see Father Christmas yet this year, now is the time to make plans. The best experiences book up early and relaxed sessions typically only run on a handful of dates, so it pays to be prepared!

The SEN friendly festive events listed below took place last year but are not yet confirmed for Christmas 2026 – I will of course update as information becomes available.
Christmas at Dunham Massey – Thursday 13th November 2025 to Saturday 3rd January 2026
I’ve included Christmas at Dunham Massey in this list of SEN friendly Christmas activities as they do offer a free carer ticket but it’s worth noting that there will be flashing lights however, these will not be strobe lighting. The team have worked to guidelines on photosensitive epilepsy and will adhere to the industry standard of synchronising effects and locking the sequences to ensure that lights do not operate at more than 5 flashes per second.
The trail has a fully accessible route, with a mixture of hard standing footpaths and temporary surfaces.
For Christmas at Dunham Massey 2025 there will be a number of quiet access sessions which will take place on Thursday 20th November, Thursday 27th November and Wednesday 3rd December and Tuesday 9th December at 4:00pm and 4:15pm – there will be a reduced capacity and held at twilight to make the transition to dark easier.
The Christmas Light Trail at Dunham Massey brings the magic of Christmas to life and is absolutely our favourite festive adventure of recent years.
Tickets for the Christmas Light Trail at Dunham Massey must be pre-booked. Parking for Christmas at Dunham Massey costs £8 per car or is free for National Trust members when booked in advance.

Northern Lights Manchester, Heaton Park – Thursday 20th November to 31st December 2025
If you’ve done a light trail at Heaton Park before, it’s important to note that Northern Lights Manchester is an entirely new set up brought to you by the team who have been running successful light trails in Newcastle, Leeds and Cardiff for a number of years now.
This winter they’ve have weaved illuminated magic around Heaton Park with a trail which is designed to be inclusive and accessible.
Book tickets for Northern Lights Manchester priced from £5 for children and £15 for adults (Super Off Peak) up to £16.50 for children and £23.95 for adults (Peak). There are two neuro-inclusive evenings taking place on Wednesday 3rd and Wednesday 10th December 2025.

SEND Family Santa Special on the East Lancs Railway – Saturday 22nd / Sunday 23rd / Saturday 29th November 2025
This Christmas, the East Lancashire Railway is putting on a Santa Special train specially designed for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
You are invited to enjoy all the magic and wonder of a typical ELR Santa Special with a few adjustments to make the event as welcoming and comfortable as possible including turning down the music, removing flashing lights from the grotto and a toned down performance from characters. They’ve introduced special Calm Carriages which will not include a live performance from the Brass Band.
Tickets for the SEND Santa Special are available now. ELR offer one free carer ticket per group.
SEN Evening at RHS Glow 2025 at RHS Garden Bridgewater, Occupation Rd, Worsley, Manchester M28 2LJ – Tuesday 9th December 2025
This winter, Glow at RHS Garden Bridgewater is holding an SEN Evening which has been adapted to have less flashing, noise and people.
Tickets for the SEN Evening at RHS Glow must be pre-booked with an adult non-member costing £16.50 and children between 5 and 16 priced from £9.25. Entry is provided for two carers free of charge accompanying visitors whose disability necessitates their support.
Whispering Winter Sessions at The Trafford Centre – Sunday 30th November / Sunday 7th December 2025
“In a land filled with wonder and enchantment, where dreams come true and letters to Santa require a very special delivery. Families will journey through the Candy Cane Land and Enchanted Forest in search of Santa’s Merry Mailroom. Assisted by Santa’s Elves, challenges and tasks await them on this journey, whilst they embark on an adventure to deliver their very own letter to Santa in his cosy cabin.”
This Christmas, The Grotto at The Trafford Centre will ensure that “Dear Santa” is a joyful experience for every child by introducing ‘Whispering Winter’ sessions exclusively for those with Special Educational Needs and or who are autistic – unfortunately the SEN sessions are all set to be during the school day which doesn’t make them all that accessible, I’m hoping that they see fit to add more sessions!
They have adjusted the full Wonderland experience by allowing fewer guests, muting sounds and creating a calm and magical setting for meeting Santa.

Whispering Winter Session – Review – Mother Geek
Enchanted Winter Walk (Quiet Session) at Quarry Bank – Saturday 6th / Thursday 18th December 2025
With festive lighting and illuminated walkways, take a wander through the Upper Garden on the Enchanted Winter Walk at Quarry Bank. Keep an eye out for Mrs Claus preparing the sleigh for Christmas Eve, and little ones, don’t forget to pick up your reindeer food ready for the big day.
These sessions will involve less lighting, no music and fewer ticket holders per sessions.
Your ticket includes entry and a hot drink for adults or reindeer food and child size hot drink for children. This experience should last around 30 minutes. Don’t forget to wrap up warm!
Book tickets for the Enchanted Winter Walk at Quarry Bank priced at £9.50. National Trust admission charges do not apply – both NT members and non-members need to purchase tickets for this event. If you require a carer ticket, please bring proof of eligibility.
A Quieter Breakfast with Santa at Bramley Farm, Altrincham – Sunday 7th December 2025
Families can celebrate the festive season with a special quieter “Breakfast with Santa” experience at Bramley Farm this December for those who prefer a more relaxed expierence.
Adults can enjoy a buffet breakfast with unlimited tea and coffee for £10.99, while children can tuck into their own buffet, enjoy a drink and receive a surprise gift for £9.99. There will be the chance to write a letter to Santa, collect a certificate of attendance and receive a present from Santa himself.

A Quieter Breakfast with Santa at Primrose Farm, Wigan – Sunday 7th December 2025
Families can enjoy a quieter festive breakfast with Santa at Farmhouse Inns on the first Sunday in December. Adults can help themselves to the buffet breakfast with unlimited tea and coffee for £10.99, while children enjoy their own buffet, a drink and a surprise gift for £9.99 (£10.99 on Christmas Eve). Little ones can also write a letter to Santa, receive a certificate of attendance and a present from Santa himself.

Robin Hood at Manchester Opera House – Tuesday 30th December 2025
This Christmas, Manchester Opera House are hosting a “Relaxed Performance” of Robin Hood on Tuesday 30th December at 1.30pm.
To make the experience less overwhelming, loud bangs, strobe lighting and pyrotechnics will be removed.

SEND Ice Skating Session at Rochdale Ice Rink – Saturday 29th November 2025
At 10am on Saturday 29th November, Rochdale Ice Rink are hosting a one off session for children and families who would prefer a quieter, more spacious experience on the ice. This session is designed to feel calm, relaxed, and supportive – perfect for children who may find busy public sessions overwhelming.
To create a more comfortable environment for those who may need it, Rochdale Ice Rink will reduce capacity and lower the noise during this special SEND session. Spaces are of course limited so do make sure you book ahead for this special session.
A Quiet Visit with Father Christmas at Quarry Bank Mill – Christmas 2025 TBC
The information below relates to last year’s event and will be updated as soon as details become available.
This Christmas, Quarry Bank Mill are hosting neurodiverse friendly sessions to meet Father Christmas with fewer guests and no music. This special 30 minute session will include festive activities, crafts and the chance to meet Father Christmas and receive a gift in a more relaxed atmosphere.
These sessions are open to guests of any age who have additional needs – just book a Father Christmas ticket for each child/attendee that wishes to receive a gift. Two adults/carers per family group are permitted to attend with the ticket holder.
None National Trust members do not need to purchase Quarry Bank admission tickets in order to attend this event. If, however, you wish to explore the buildings and gardens on your visit, then you will need to pay for admission at Visitor Reception.
Santa’s Story Time at John Lewis, Trafford Centre | No event for 2025
Whilst John Lewis do seem to have lots of lovely Christmas events happening this year, none of them are at the Trafford Centre! The information below relates to last year’s event.
Santa’s taking a well-earned break ahead of the big Christmas rush. Join him at John Lewis, Trafford Centre for a special Christmas story time session – relaxed inclusive sessions are available for anyone who might benefit from them including disabled, neurodiverse or sensory sensitive children – you can get more details about how these sessions have been adapted here.
Registered carers are entitled to one free ticket for each paying child who requires care.
Book tickets for Santa’s Story Time priced at £17.50 per child and £3 for adults.
Quiet and Calm Sessions at Skate Manchester – Christmas 2025 TBC
The information below relates to last year’s event and will be updated as soon as details become available.
This Christmas, Skate Manchester are offering Quiet and Calm Skate Sessions at 11am on selected days. These sessions will offer a more relaxed ice skating experience with no flashing lights, softer music and fewer skaters on the rink. There will also be a 6pm Quiet and Calm session on 20th November 2024.

Low Sensory Santa Camp at Problem Child Brewing, Parbold – Friday 6th / Friday 13th December 2024
This year Problem Child Brewing are offering the opportunity for children and adults to experience a gentle low sensory Santa’s Camp. The usually bustling Christmas Tipi will be calm, quiet and sensory friendly with areas to relax for anyone feeling overwhelmed.
The low sensory Nativity Trail will have fewer children per group, more time with Santa himself and a choice of gift.
The team at Problem Child Brewing really want to make visiting Santa an accessible experience and ahead of your visit you will have the chance to tell them how we can help you and your child have the best experience. They will let you know what you can expect when you arrive and but the team will go with the flow – prioritising engagement and interaction over any kind of script.
Book your Low Sensory Santa Camp experience priced at £15 per child (which is a £2.50 per child increase on last year!)
The events below took place previously but will not be taking place in 2025
Christmas at Heaton Park | No event for 2025
The information below relates to a previous event at Heaton Park. Whilst Christmas at Heaton Park won’t be returning, there is a new Northern Lights Manchester event taking place.
I’ve included Christmas at Heaton Park in this list of SEN friendly Christmas activities as they do offer a free carer ticket but it’s worth noting that there will be flashing lights which can’t be avoided and it can get quite busy.
New for 2023, and taking the place of Lightopia after they went into administration at the start of the year, the team behind Christmas at Dunham Massey and Christmas at Kew are bringing their special brand of seasonal lights to Heaton Park.
You’ll find fairground rides (these will be an additional charge), colour-changing globes of light stretching out into the distance, larger-than-life flowers and neon strings that reach high into the sky. There will be a laser garden filled with thousands of tiny beams of light and a giant twinkling tunnel that surrounds you with sparkle and makes for fantastic photo opportunities.
Tickets for Christmas at Heaton Park must be pre-booked online. Early bird pricing is in place until the 1st of October with tickets available from £12.
