The Hospital Bag

So I’m 34 weeks now and though I’ve got a date for my planned section I know that there is always the chance that Beak might decide to make an early exit (though I sincerely hope not as Dave is away on a course almost 3 hours away at 37 weeks so I need to be keeping my legs crossed at that stage!)

I’m thinking perhaps I ought to start getting the hospital bag packed . . . as in the words of the lovely Kate from Family Fever: “You probably ought to pack it soon  . . . you don’t want to end up like me, stuck in hospital with no knickers . . . ”

I’m going to order some gorgeous new sleepsuits from The Essential One (but I can’t show you which ones as that would give the game away)

I’ve had to buy new muslins as Chlo adopted my current stash as comforters and I would hate to think she thought the baby had stolen them – so I now have a small collection of patterned muslins so that we can’t confuse them.

I’ve got out all the vests & sleepsuits in 0-3 months and they are washed and ready.

So I’m sort of prepared but I’ve done nothing about my hospital bag . . . What do I need in my hospital bag?  You’d think having done this twice I’d be a dab hand but I’ve got a mental block on the issue:

Big pants (VERY important after a section)
Nighties (PJs are no good when they can rub on your section wound)
Basic toiletries (Not really much need for make up!)
Nappies & wipes  (I’m still considering going down the fluffy route but I will be taking disposables to hospital for ease)
Breast pads
Snacks (for Dave too!)
Clothes to come home in
Phone charger
Vests, sleepsuits and muslins for Beak

Anything else?! Help! All suggestions / recommendations welcome!!

It's true….you really don't want to end up like me. Nothing worse than having no knickers you know. Get that bag packed!

How about a magazine for any time you are left waiting before you go to theater? Aww, I loved getting everything ready. Good luck!

Good plan! There's bound to be at least on EMCS in before me I'm sure!

Maternity pillow, helped me loads feeding after both sections

  5. October 2, 2013 / 9:02 pm

Maternity towels, snacks , something to occupy you on the ward after (as if a newborn won't be enough)

Maternity pillow is a must–and I splurged and got some seriously lovely shower gel from the Body Shop (Maringa I think?). Made me feel like a millionaire on that first shower after recovery. Also comfortable headphones–I listened to music through my phone to drown out the snoring, crying, etc. on the nights I had to stay in. Oh! and slippers and/or flip flops.

Oooh nice shower gel! Good point!
Those nights are awful aren't they – other ppl on the phone in the middle of the night drove me to distraction last time!

A few treats for the older brothers and sisters when they visit? It didn't make my little one any more excited about her little brother but it may work for you 😉

    • October 4, 2013 / 11:46 am

Ah yes Erin you're right! I have treats planned for them both from baby but haven't bought them yet – must add those to my list! Thank you x

Bottles of water? Something for entertainment? And a pillow of your own? That's something I'd definitely take if I were doing it all over again knowing I'd have to stay in. Always hard to think of everything without packing too much though!! We had to buy all new blankets when Lil Miss was born, Lil Man got so attached to his and like you, I didn't want him thinking that she'd stolen them!!

Slippers! I loved packing my bag, but I was always going to forget something. You know what I forgot? A blanket for the baby, and we had to use the hospital issue ones, which are really thin and rubbish. It would be OK if I forgot it once, but I also forgot it second time around just 18 months later, d'oh! Good luck honey – how EXCITING!!! xxx 🙂

a hat incase his/her little head gets cold, a dark coloured towel, a pen incase you get REALLY bored or can't sleep and you can do puzzles in a magazine, some change incase the MR forgets car park money when visiting lol

Your own pillow from home? Some nice shower gel too.

Hasn't that gone quickly?! As for the bag you seem to have it covered, although one thing I would add is your favurite lippy or lip balm, as you say not a lot of need for make up, but I was glad I took a few basics such as lip balm it made me feel better about facing all the visitors!

It has just flown by! I can't believe that it's now just a matter of weeks till Beak is here!
