Borough Market is situated right in central London in Southwark, making it perfectly placed for our post-Tower of London / pre-Southbank / Westminster sightseeing and, in my friend Glen’s words is ‘a grub hot spot’ – he was not wrong!
By the time we made it over to Borough Market it was about 3:30pm and way past lunchtime – the kids were absolutely starving (so were we if I’m honest) so we were keen to get everyone fed fairly quickly. The market is pretty vast with more than 100 stalls, stands, restaurants and bars selling everything from fresh produce and specialist foods to more street food options than you can shake a stick at.
As as is often the way with markets like this the hardest thing is always going to be choosing what to eat and hoping that you don’t end up with a regret when someone else has a different meal – food envy is the worst!
I was keen to make sure that we got the kids fed first. Amy in particular was really struggling because she was so hungry but what this meant was that she was overwhelmed by choice and found it even harder to make a decision. In the end we went for a fairly safe bet of a chicken tikka kebab knowing that naan bread and chicken tikka is always going to be a win for her. I think there were probably more exciting things that she could have eaten but I just needed to get food in her at this point!

Chlo went for pasta which is a fairly safe ‘go to’ for her and I was almost a little bit disappointed that she didn’t try something different. But, when you’re spending £10 per head on a meal, you want to know it’s going to be something that you’ll enjoy. We found a pasta stand selling a variety of different pastas – you chose your plain pasta and then you could choose so many different toppings. She said that her pasta was absolutely delicious – she’d actually eaten it all before I got back to her so I didn’t even get to see it never mind take a photograph of it.
Ben chose Chicken Shawarma – again there is no picture because he ate it too fast but I would suggest from the amount he has talked about this shawarma since, it was probably one of the best he’s eaten. He said the sauce was just the right amount of garlicy and the whole thing was just really tasty!

Having already had a little bit of a chat with my friend Cesca about Borough Market, I knew exactly what I wanted for my meal. She had sent me an Instagram post from The Black Pig London with the most incredible looking sandwich and I was determined to find it.
It actually took us a little while to find The Black Pig London – and in fact we walked right past it as first – but once we’d found, I was pleased to see the sandwich I wanted was top of the menu and I got it ordered!
The Honey Truffle Parmesan was absolutely epic and I could have easily eaten it twice. Dave’s sandwich (the Smoked Scarmorza) was messy but delicious. Neither of us had any regrets about our food choices and would heartily recommend you pay The Black Pig a visit if you get chance – we will certainly be going back next time we’re in London!

We were lucky that we were able to find seats on the steps opposite The Black Pig to be able to sit down and eat our sandwiches (the kids had pretty much finished eating by this point) as these are sandwiches which require two hands, a napkin and some concentration.
We managed to find a space big enough to seat the six of us, where we sat for a good hour I would say. One of the things I love most about food markets (apart from all the delicious food options) is just being able to people watch, to just sit and watch the world go by. This is probably just as well because when Dave went to pick up crumble from Humble Crumble the queue was a good half an hour long!
As I’ve said in a previous post, a long queue can either mean something is really good or just that it’s had a little bit of viral success over on social media! I think that in the case of Humble Crumble it’s probably a bit of both. The crumbles are super instagrammable and absolutely delicious.
You basically choose yourself a fruit base (I had black forest, Dave had something cherry based I think), a crumble topping (a chocolate shortbread for me) and then you have either a delicious vanilla custard or toasted marshmallow swirl on top. You can choose a small or large portion. My friend had told me not to be fooled by the large portion – she had previously ordered a large and struggle to eat it all. She was absolutely right, I probably could have eaten a large portion but I definitely didn’t need to!

Pricing at Borough Market seems to be fully standard for a market – you’re looking at around £10 a head for most meals so it’s not cheap but we didn’t feel we’d been short changed as the quality was spot on. As well as plenty of different foods to eat at Borough Market itself, there are fruit and vegetables, cheeses, breads and all sorts of things that you can pick up to take home. I would absolutely make a beeline for Borough Market if we were in central London again!
