A simple Chinese Dragon

We were tasked with creating a Chinese New Year themed craft with this fabulous box of goodies:

What a collection of stuff!

I spent quite a while contemplating different ideas. . . I particularly liked the idea of making Chinese Lanterns but I’ve had a Year 3 class struggle with those before so I wasn’t convinced Chloe would cope, especially with all the measuring / cutting out and I did really want them to be quite independent with their work.

In the end I decided to go with a simple Chinese Dragon – something that both children would be able to do most of the work for without help but which would still be really effective.

So here’s what we did! 

1. Use Bostik Glu Dots to attach tissue paper flames around the mouth of your dragon (also known as the open end of a paper cup)

2. Attach googly eyes to your dragon’s head

3. Poke a lolly stick carefully through the paper cup to form a handle

Mummy had made a small hole with scissors to make this easier

4. Make a chain to form the body (we used the foam links we had been provided with but you could just as easily make your own paper chain)

You can make the chain as long or as short as you like

5. Attach the chain to the base of the paper cup using Bostik Glu Dots

6. Attach another lolly stick to the other end of the chain to form another handle

Of course you could go on to decorate your Chinese dragon further but that about suited the attention span of Ben and Chloe this morning and we wanted to keep things simple!
