Five easy ways to level up your “work from home” look!

Last Updated on 27 September 2023 by Colette

When you work from home, it’s really easy to spend your day in the same pair of leggings and the same black t shirt day in day out. My standard work from home uniform is a non-wired bra, no make up (though usually with plenty of skincare layered on) and comfy leggings – and at this time of year a big snuggly cardigan.

The only people I see outside of the house on a regular basis are other parents on the school run so it can feel a bit of a waste to spend time putting on make up or planning an outfit that nobody will see. That said, there are definitely days where I look at myself in the mirror and think I really ought to make a bit more effort and on the days where I do spend a bit of time on my hair or make up, I feel a lot better for it!

Wash your hair!

I’ve always said that one of my life ambitions is to be able to afford to pay someone else to wash and dry my hair every week – I’ve always had really thick hair that takes forever to dry (though a combination of my Dyson hair dryer and my hair thinning with age has definitely reduced the drying time) and it never looks the same as a salon blow dry! Either way, hair wash day is just a bit of a pain isn’t it and it’s really easy to put off when you’re just going to be sat at your desk at home all day!

If I’m working, I need to have my hair tied up off my face or it gets on my nerves so a nice high bun (usually packed with Olaplex dry shampoo) is a pretty standard part of my day to day look but when I do give my hair a good wash and dry, I always feel 100% better for it!

Splash on some perfume

I’m super fussy about fragrance and find women’s fragrances are often too floral or sweet – I’m typically drawn to more unisex fragrances. My current favourite perfume is Tom Ford’s Rose Prick but that’s hella spendy so I keep that one for when I want to feel a bit fancy. My day to day perfume is All Saints Sunset Riot and you best believe I’m spritzing myself with that just to sit at my desk and have nobody else smell it because it’s a mood lift and takes a matter of seconds when I’m getting dressed on a morning!

Get your brows and lashes done.

I honestly love nothing more than taking the time to put on a full face of make up – just not to sit at my desk all day! On the days where I’m working from home, I tend to take advantage of a make up free day and just layer on the skin care instead – especially if I’ve had my favourite HD brow and LVL treatment as that always makes me feel super fresh anyway!

Wear some colour

As I said at the start of this article, it’s really easy to slip into a very lazy uniform of leggings and t shirts when you work from home – if I’m sat at my desk all day and nobody is going to see me then 100% the most important factor in my outfit choice is “Is it comfortable?” followed by “Is it easy?” – by which I mean can I just chuck it on with no ironing etc? I can almost guarantee that it will be black too.

Except well know the mood boosting power of colour don’t we – I actually had colour analysis done years ago so I know exactly which colours suit me best, but I still default to black because it’s easy. A pop of colour – be it a brightly coloured t shirt or cardigan or even a red lip – will always do the trick at making me feel more put together at my desk without actually making any more effort.

Wear jewellery

I’ve always had a bit of a thing for accessories – gorgeous jewellery helps me get away with having a boring wardrobe! I tend not to wear bangles or bracelets when I’m working at my desk as they clatter and annoy me when I’m typing but popping some nice earrings in or a necklace on lifts that standard black t-shirt and cosy cardigan to something a bit more intentional!
