Blackpool, the home of the famous illuminations, the iconic Blackpool tower, a busy promenade packed with arcades, fish and chip shops and more cheesy souvenirs than you can shake a stick at. Safe to say Blackpool has a bit of a reputation for being a tacky seaside town – one that is as popular with groups of stags and hens out on the raz as it is with families looking for a traditional seaside day out.
Blackpool has a long history of being one of the UK’s most popular tourist destinations and whilst there’s a whole world of things to spend your money on – from Madame Tussauds and the Sea Life Centre to the Sandcastle waterpark and Blackpool Pleasure Beach, there’s still plenty of free attractions in Blackpool too!
I’ve pulled together a list of free activities and attractions in Blackpool so you can have a memorable trip without denting your wallet! Some of these free things to do in Blackpool are seasonal so do make sure you check dates and opening times before setting off!
Free things to do in Blackpool with the kids
Blackpool Beach
Top of the list when it comes to free things to do in Blackpool has to be the beach itself – have you even been to the seaside if you haven’t felt the sand on your toes? Blackpool is home to a lovely sandy beach – one where the tide does actually come right in so you can paddle (unlike lots of other North West beaches). Keep a close eye on the tide times though as the sea comes right up onto the steps at high tide so don’t get set up for the day and expect to be able to stay on the sand!
If it’s a sunny day and you feel the need to treat yourself to an ice cream, we recommend heading back off the main drag to Notarianni’s.

Blackpool Illuminations – end of August 2026 to early January 2027
Blackpool Illuminations light up the town from late August to the start of January each year. You can walk along the promenade to view the illuminations for free.
You can read our top tips for visiting Blackpool Illuminations here.

Blackpool Tower
Although entry to Blackpool Tower requires a fee, you can still enjoy the exterior view of this iconic landmark for free!

Stanley Park
Stanley Park is more than just a large green space in Blackpool – it is in fact a Grade II-listed park which has been voted the best park in the UK twice!
Stanley Park is free to visit and is the perfect spot to escape the hustle and bustle of Blackpool seafront.
We have taken the kids to Stanley Park before heading to the Illuminations at tea time – the play area kept them busy for ages but we were super cold so definitely wrap up warm if you’re planning on visiting during the latter months of the year.

Blackpool Skate Park
Blackpool Skate Park is a relatively new addition to Blackpool – situated in Stanley Park, this huge purpose built skate park is free to use and open all year round.
Comedy Carpet
Located near the Blackpool Tower, the Comedy Carpet is a giant art installation (one of the largest pieces of public art ever commissioned in the UK) which pays homage to British comedy. This permanent artwork features jokes, catchphrases, and the names of comedy legends embedded in the pavement.

North Pier
Take a stroll along the historic North Pier, offering beautiful views of the coastline. If you head to the North Pier in the early evening, you might well be treated to a glorious sunset over the Irish Sea – or it might be cloudy and wet and you’ll see nothing!
Great Promenade Show
The Great Promenade Show consists of ten pieces of artwork along Blackpool Promenade from South Pier heading south. It is generally thought of as an outdoor art gallery reflecting Blackpool’s history and character, with the works commissioned from both established and emerging artists.
Blackpool Central Pier
Visit the Central Pier and enjoy the lively atmosphere. Take a walk on the pier, play arcade games (obviously not free!), or enjoy the views of the coast.
Grundy Art Gallery
For art enthusiasts, the Grundy Art Gallery offers free entry and showcases a variety of contemporary and modern artworks. The gallery frequently hosts exhibitions, ensuring there’s always something new to discover.
Free Ice Skating on Blackpool Sea Front
This one is super seasonal but absolutely worth a mention. From mid November to the start of January, you’ll find a free to use, synthetic ice skating rink on Blackpool’s seafront.
No advance booking is required, simply turn up, change to your free rental skates and take to the rink. The rink can accommodate up to 60 skaters at any one time and there is a designated changing facility, skate aids and disability aids available.
More information about the free outdoor ice skating rink on Blackpool seafront here.
Free things to do in Blackpool
Remember, while these activities are free, additional costs may apply for certain attractions or amenities within the area. It’s also really important to check the opening hours and availability of these attractions before visiting, as some may have specific seasonal schedules.

Suitably impressed! Quite incredible that there is so much there that is free! Stanley Park looks and sounds lovely and I’d never heard of it! We used to go to Blackpool every year many years ago and explored quite a bit. Can’t believe I missed that! Free ice skating is pretty amazing!
