Pumpkin picking is a relatively new tradition in the UK but has definitely increased in popularity in recent years. A relatively inexpensive day out (unless you go bonkers and pick a whole barrow full), pumpkin picking at your local pumpkin patch can be a fun and memorable activity for families during the October half term and Halloween season. Pumpkin picking is a great opportunity for the whole family to spend time together outdoors, enjoy the autumn atmosphere, and of course, find the perfect pumpkin for carving or cooking.
Pumpkin picking experiences can vary wildly – I’ve seen some places literally just lay out rows of nice clean pumpkins in the field for you to pick up and buy whereas others are a more “genuine” experience where the pumpkin has grown in said field and actually is now ready to be removed from the plant! Either way, it’s a step up from grabbing a pumpkin from Tesco at the last minute and a great seasonal day out.
Some pumpkin picking places literally offer you a “pick your own” experience with maybe a café serving snacks and hot drinks however, increasingly picking your pumpkin is part of a wider experience involving carving the pumpkin on site and taking part in other Halloween themed activities.
It’s worth bearing in mind that because half term in actually the week before Halloween this year, nearly all of the pumpkin picking experiences near Blackpool close before Halloween itself so don’t leave your pumpkin picking to the last minute.

Don’t forget – pumpkin picking is very much an outdoor activity and usually based in muddy fields which means, as Blackpool isn’t really known for it’s fields, you’re not going to find a pumpkin picking experience right the middle of Blackpool and might have to travel a little bit! As such I’ve picked pumpkin patches close to Blackpool, a number of which are in the Preston area. I’ve tried to order the pumpkin patches according to how close they are to Blackpool!

Pumpkin Festival at Ridgeway Farm, Peel Rd, Blackpool FY4 5JX – Saturday 11th October to Friday 31st October 2025
Ridgeway Farm’s Pumpkin Festival returns for it’s 5th year and promises to be back, bigger and better than ever before!
This October, put your wellies on, wrap up warm and head down to Ridgeway Farm to meet the farm animals, choose your pumpkin from the Pumpkin Patch and bring it back to the autumnal themed orchard to decorate it.
Ridgeway Farm’s annual Pumpkin Festival runs each weekend from Saturday 11th October and then daily through half term up to Friday 31st October 2025. This was a sell-out event last year so it pays to be organised and get your tickets booked sooner rather than later (and as a bonus treat for you keen beans, there’s an early bird discount too!)
Book your tickets for Pumpkin Festival at Ridgeway Farm – Early bird tickets are priced from just £7.50 for adults and £8.95 for children (walking age upwards). Tickets include entry to the farm on your selected session time and a pumpkin each for all children with a ticket, extra pumpkins can be purchased on the day.
Farmer Parrs Animal World, Rossall Lane, Fleetwood FY7 8SL – Saturday 4th to Friday 31st October 2025
Situated in Fleetwood, just 20 minutes from Blackpool, Farmer Parrs Animal World has a pumpkin patch where you can pick your own pumpkins. They offer tractor rides, animal encounters, and other attractions as well.
Tickets for Parr’s Patch are available to book from Friday 5th September. The pumpkin patch at Farmer Parr’s Animal World is free to visit and pumpkins were priced from £3 each last year.
Bradshaws Farm Shop & Garden Centre at Prospect Farm, Garstang By Pass Road, Preston PR3 0LP – Wednesday 1st to Wednesday 29th October 2025
Bradshaws Farm Shop, Preston is a 30 minute drive from Blackpool.
Open daily throughout October (though closing just shy of Halloween) Bradshaws Farm Shop invite you to their Pumpkin Patch full of pumpkins and squash in a variety of sizes and colours.
The pumpkins and squash at Bradshaws are sold by weight so your pumpkin haul will be weighed when you have finished and you pay for what you have picked – this means if you’ve picked loads of pumpkins you might get a shock when you get to the till – paying by weight does make it harder to budget than when pumpkins are priced by size / type etc.
To book a 45 minute time slot to visit the patch please visit www.bradshawsfarmshop.co.uk – bookings must be made online. The £2.95 fee is per vehicle not per person.
Croston Pumpkin Patch, Culshaws Farm, Holker Ln, Leyland PR26 8LL – weekends from Saturday 4th October and then daily from Monday 27th to Friday 31st October 2025
Croston Pumpkin Patch in Leyland is about a 40 minute drive from Blackpool.
There’s no need to pre book your visit to Croston Pumpkin Patch and there is no entry fee – just turn up and choose your own Halloween pumpkins from the acres if homegrown pumpkins! Keep an eye on their facebook page for more details.
Not yet confirmed for 2025: This October, Croston Pumpkin Patch will be hosting Gemma Marie Photography so you can book yourselves a professional pumpkin themed photoshoot at the pumpkin patch! I have a feeling these slots will book up quickly so if you’re keen, get in touch with Gemma asap via facebook.
Pumpkin Picking Adventure at Windmill Animal Farm, Fish Lane, Burscough, Ormskirk L40 1UQ – Saturday 11th to Friday 31st October 2025
About 50 minutes from Blackpool itself, in Ormskirk, you’ll find Windmill Animal Farm.
Pumpkin picking at Windmill Animal Far is a full day out with your ticket giving you access to Windmill Animal Farm itself, an indoor and outdoor play area, the Maize of Monsters, Mere Trail and Farm Train.
All pumpkins are grown onsite at Windmill Animal Farm and there’s lots of different varieties of pumpkin in a range of sizes to choose from. Your ticket allows you to choose one free pumpkin per person from the pumpkin patch but you are welcome to purchase more pumpkins on the day! Windmill Animal Farm provide wheelbarrows to help you bring your pumpkin haul in from the field – don’t forget to wear wellies!

Roby Mill Pumpkin Patch, Johnsons Farm, Lafford Ln, Up Holland, Skelmersdale WN8 0QY – from Saturday 4th October 2025
Roby Mill Pumpkin Patch operates from a family run farm in Up Holland – about 50 minutes from Blackpool and they have been growing pumpkins and gourds for just short of a decade.
Roby Mill Pumpkin Patch have over twenty different varieties of pumpkins and gourds in a range of colours and sizes – just pay for what you pick! There will be hot food and drinks available to purchase and of course lots of photo opportunities!
This October, you can book a “mini shoot” with a professional photographer if you want to capture some extra special seasonal memories this year (and if, like me, you’re always the one behind the camera, perhaps this would be a good chance to get some pictures of you with the kids!)
Dogs are welcome at Roby Mill Pumpkin Patch but must be kept on a lead.
Tickets for pumpkin picking at Roby Mill Pumpkin Patch are available to book online now. Everyone visiting the pumpkin patch must have a ticket. The pumpkin patch is free to enter but you need to book tickets with a set arrival time to ensure the pumpkin patch doesn’t get too busy.
The Pumpkin Patch Hightown, Orrell Hill Ln, Liverpool L38 5DA – from Wednesday 1st to Friday 31st October 2025
Stretching the definition of “near Blackpool” – The Pumpkin Patch Hightown is an hour’s drive from Blackpool.
The Pumpkin Patch Hightown are famous for their huge, perfect pumpkins and are really excited for you to see all the varieties of pumpkins, squashes and gourds they have grown of you this year!
Unlike many of the pumpkin patches near Blackpool, The Pumpkin Patch Hightown are open every single day in October, right up to Halloween.
As well as pumpkin picking, there’s a free Maize Maze at The Pumpkin Patch Hightown and pumpkin photo shoots available with authorised photographers Bobtale Photography and New Mumma Photography – contact them directly to book.
Dogs are welcome at The Pumpkin Patch Hightown but must be kept on a short lead and it goes without saying that you need to make sure you clean up after them!
There’s no need to book and entry to The Pumpkin Patch Hightown is free.
Church View Farm, Southport Rd, Lydiate, Liverpool L31 4HJ – Saturday 4th to Friday 31st October 2025
About an hour’s drive from Blackpool, Church View Farm will be hosting their usual Pumpkin Picking Event from Saturday 4th October right through to Halloween itself (or until sell out).
There fairground is cash only but cash, card and contactless payments are accepted for pumpkins and in the farm shop
There is no pre booking required, no admission fees and no car parking charges. Keep an eye on their facebook page for updates.
Pumpkin Alley, Delf Lane, Ormskirk L39 7JJ – open daily from Saturday 27th September through to Friday 31st October 2025
About an hour’s drive from Blackpool is Pumpkin Alley.
Pumpkin Alley offer free admission and parking – just pay for what you pick!
Dogs are welcome at Pumpkin Alley but must be kept on a lead.

Haigh Woodland Park, School Ln, Wigan WN2 1PE | No event for 2025
Haigh Woodland Park have confirmed they will not be hosting a pumpkin picking event in 2025 – the information below relates to last year’s event.
Situated in Wigan, and about 50 minutes drive from Blackpool is Haigh Woodland Park. If you’ve never been to Haigh Woodland Park then I definitely recommend a visit – it’s especially beautiful in the autumn and my kids love the adventure play area. (We’ve also had a really gorgeous snowy walk at Haigh Woodland Park too!)
As part of Haigh Woodland Park’s Halloween celebrations this year, ticket holders are entitled to choose a pumpkin to take home (the pumpkins will be laid out within the event arena) as well as enjoying a range of Halloween themed fun.
Tickets for the pumpkin picking event at Haigh Woodland Park are available to book now priced at £5.50 per person plus booking fee. All attendees require a ticket. Standard parking charges apply.
Pumpkin Picking at Old Holly Farm, Cabus Nook Lane, Garstang, Preston, PR3 1AA | Permanently closed.
Old Holly Farm is a working farm and no longer open to the public as a visitor attraction
Big Pumpkins Becconsall Ln, Hesketh Bank, Preston PR4 6RR | Permanently closed
Big Pumpkins at Hesketh Bank did not re open after Covid.
