Whilst the Huddersfield Canal path runs right the way from Ashton to Huddersfield – the section we choose to walk is from Greenfield to Grandpa Greene’s in Diggle because who doesn’t want the reward of an ice cream on a long dog walk!

From Greenfield, the walk to Grandpa Greene’s is about 2.3 miles and whilst it is mostly flat, you are walking up the canal so there’s the odd steep slope or set of steps to contend with at each lock or bridge which is something to bear in mind if you’re walking the canal path with a pushchair or wheelchair. (Of course the walk back to the car is easier because you’re walking back down the canal again!)
For a shorter route you could hop on the canal path around Upper Mill (where the new Greene’s Bistro is).

Because you are literally walking along the canal path – and Grandpa Greene’s is on the canal side, there is nowhere to get lost! This is a lovely straight walk – nice and simple to do with kids. Do bear in mind that it is a popular route with people running, cycling and walking dogs too!

Parking for the Huddersfield Canal path
Parking for the Huddersfield Canal path obviously depends on where you to choose to join the route. We park on the road just down from Greenfield Station (OL3 7JZ) and join the path nearby off Chew Valley Road.

When you get to Grandpa Greene’s you’ll find a play area on the opposite side of the canal and obviously there are toilets at Grandpa Greene’s itself.
There’s number of picnic benches outside Grandpa Greene’s if you need somewhere to rest your legs or there’s benches on the other side of the canal too. Grandpa Greene’s can get really busy on a nice day so having a sit mat might prove useful!
