Noticing Kindness

Did you know that it was Random Acts of Kindness week a couple of weeks ago? I hope you noticed kindness everywhere?

Random Acts of Kindness

I wanted to share with you an extract from Becky Goddard-Hill’s new book Create Your own Kindness which is packed with 50 kindness activities for kids aged 6-12. It is out this week and is full of ways to help our kids become kinder and more caring.  (You might remember Becky co-authored Create Your Own Happy which Chloe loved and still dips into regularly.)

Each activity is underpinned with a little science, so kids know how it works too.

In this extract Becky explains how noticing kindness and giving it some focus can really increase it.

The more attention we give to kindness the bigger and more important it will become in all our lives. By sharing stories about kindness we will inspire each other and bring more kindness into the world.

Kindness is awesome and it deserves to be celebrated, shared and noticed.

Did you know…

Your brain has a filter that lets in the things you are focussed on. This is called the Reticular Activating System (RAS). That’s why you will always hear someone call your name even in noisy room or see someone wearing a yellow t-shirt if you are wearing a yellow t-shirt.

If you give lots of focus to kindness you are telling your brain it is important. It will then automatically begin to notice more kindness and it will play a bigger part in your life.

All because of your brain’s brilliant filter.

So how do we get kids to focus more on kindness?  There are lots of things we can do.

Encourage kids to share kind stories, make a kindness poster and talk about kindness wherever they see it.

We can read them kind stories from the newspaper or books, make being kind a dinner conversation or perhaps help them write a kindness poem.

We need to encourage our kids to give kindness the attention it deserves!
