It has become something of a tradition that at the start of January, I write about our travel plans for the year – in fact this is the sixth time I’ve done it now.
At the start of 2023 I wrote that we had quite ambitious travel plans compared to recent years – with a family holiday in France and a childfree trip to Italy to look forward to. I also wrote about the potential for a couple of childfree nights in France and Kirst and I finally taking our Dollybirds trip – neither of those things actually happened but that’s just how it goes.
We pulled off a couple of festivals and some camping weekends as well as a birthday trip to London for Dave’s Mum’s birthday and a lovely bonus couple of nights away in October half term.
So what have we got planned for 2024 so far?
Dollybirds On Tour
Kirst and I have been trying to get away on holiday together for about six years now – it is in fact almost 20 years since we last went on holiday just the two of us. But it’s booked, it’s actually finally booked and in 2024, Kirst and I will get our girlie holiday together!
May half term in France
After a lush holiday in France with Aunty Custard and Chris last May, we’ve already booked our May half term holiday for 2024 – normally we have made plans to go but don’t actually book it till the new year but this time round we were keen to get it booked and boxed off so Dave actually started looking at campsites and making plans for our trip almost as soon as we got home!
We’re heading to the South of France again and plan to do the long drive with no over night stops again (you can watch a video of the drive here). Although we’d love Kirst and Chris to come with us again this year, I think it will be just the five of us this time round.
Camping trips
We only managed two camping trips last year – and both were to sites we’d already been to. For one trip that was entirely intentional, for the other we only realised the night before that we were making a return trip to the very first campsite we visited when we first started camping! Our last trip of the summer was our first time camping without the Butlers and, whilst we missed them, we still had a lovely time!
I’m hoping we’ll get some more trips in this summer, perhaps a sightly longer jaunt in the summer holidays again this year! If you’ve got campsites you love that you think we should try, I’m always open to recommendations.
Festivals!
Festivals are now a key part of our summer and something we plan our other adventures around. We’ve learned that it’s best to spread them out (consecutive festival weekends are exhausting) and two to three festivals is a good number for us.
We are super keen to return to Camp Bestival Shropshire – that was definitely a highlight of last summer for us and one that is quickly becoming a bit of a family tradition!
I’ve love to squeeze at least one other festival in – Live at Leeds in May looks like it would be good but we’re likely to be in France. I think we need to find either a festival in June or a July festival to spread it out with Camp Bestival Shropshire being in mid August.
We decided that this year we’d quite like to spend August bank holiday weekend at home again to hit up some of the local food festivals.
Another child free break
We are hopeful that we might manage to squeeze a child free holiday in later in the year (this is something we’ve done a couple of times now and both really appreciate) – but this depends very much on how our budgeting goes. We have agreed we’ll just make a decision on this one nearer the time as all we need is some sunshine and a pool for a few days so it doesn’t take too much planning!
