The big bedroom swap!

For years Chloe has been wishing for a double bed but no matter how much measuring we did, we knew there was no way we could fit even a small double into her room. Although both the bedrooms in our extension are officially “double rooms”, you’re only really going to get a double bed in if that’s the only thing that’s in there! Ben has a small double, wardrobe and a built in desk whereas Chloe had a small dressing table and narrow chest of drawers alongside her single bed and wardrobe. Essentially the only way to get a small double in her room would have been to forfeit the desk which she obviously needs.

Meanwhile, Amy had the second biggest bedroom in the house – but wasn’t allowed a double bed on the basis it wasn’t fair if she got one when Chloe couldn’t have one. Amy’s tenancy in the big bedroom came about by default as, when the extension was built, it made sense that Ben and Chloe got the brand new bedrooms on the other side of the landing and Amy, being just 15 months at the time, got the bigger bedroom that was next to ours and we just never really thought any more about it.

Earlier this year we started to question the fact that Amy had the biggest bedroom – especially as she couldn’t keep it even remotely tidy. Over the years I’ve spent ages in there clearing things out and getting it super tidy for her only for her to let it fall into a chaotic, cluttered mess again. It didn’t seem fair that she had all this space that she wasn’t looking after when Chloe so desperately wanted a double bed. After talking to the girls, we agreed to set a deadline for Amy to get on top of her bedroom or we’d swap them round. With Amy getting a new wardrobe for her birthday, it made sense to set her birthday as the deadline so her wardrobe would be built in her room and stay there but, a week or two before her birthday, it became clear that she absolutely wasn’t going to be keeping that bedroom tidy and she made the decision to swap early.

The first weekend of October half term involved decluttering and emptying each of the girls bedrooms, giving them a quick lick of paint (their walls are just brilliant white) and then setting them up in their new spaces. We didn’t want Chloe to get a new bed just because she wanted it, and we certainly couldn’t afford to replace her perfectly good single bed and mattress just for the sake of it so we agreed we’d sort her a new small double bed out for Christmas however the universe (or rather my Aunty M) came to the rescue and, with brilliant timing, my Aunty messaged to say they were redecorating their spare room and did Chloe want the double bed – as an added bonus this meant we could take the mattress and bedding that she know longer needed, safe in the knowledge that it was clean and well looked after!

We had considering getting Chloe one of the SIMBA small-double mattress toppers but in the end, thanks to another golden strike from the universe, a well-timed email from SIMBA meant that Chloe is now the very happy owner of a SIMBA Oringinal Hybrid Mattress which offers cushioned comfort thanks to patented Aerocoil® microsprings combined with extra deep Simbatex® foam as well as full body support with a nine-zoned, responsive foam base providing extra support for hips and shoulders - Chloe is hypermobile which can cause her joint pain and general discomfort so getting the right mattress is really important for her.

Chloe is extremely happy both with her new double bed, her fancy new SIMBA mattress and just the space in her new bedroom in general – it is almost always really tidy too which makes me happy! The biggest problem is getting her out of bed – which was never easy in the first place!

And Amy’s room? Well you know what, having the bigger wardrobe and smaller space has definitely helped so far – her room isn’t spick and span by any stretch but it’s definitely less chaotic than it was before!
